5120
.10's or .11's? Wound or plain 3rd string? If anyone has done both, I would appreciate input as to your results and preference At the moment I am using .10's with a plain 3rd string. I'm considering the .11's with a wound 3rd. This is my first Gretsch. Thanks.

I had 11's, tried 10's, and went back to 11's on my 5120. Simply sounded better to my ear. I may try a wound 3rd on my next set.
Congrats on the new guitar!!!

I had a set of 10-52 on the 5120. No complaints. Then I switched to T-I Swing 11 Flats, man, what a difference, they make the guitar sound great, easy to play, and, yes, you can bend.

Thanks. I have a set of .11's. I'm going to try those with the wound 3rd.

I believe it had 11's on it when I got it. My children gave it to me for my birthday. I don't know if I'll go with the flats though. I'm playing a lot of country these days. Thanks for the input.

I use 11s with a plain G. I'm planning to try flatwound 11s next time I change the strings. I've got flatwound 12s on a couple of guitars and love the feel.

I find 11's on my Gretsch too stiff for my type of lead playing, therefore I use Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 9-46

I tried a wound G on a set of 11's. I had to struggle to bend the G a whole step with the wound string, so I went back to unwound.

Thanks for that info. I don't bend on this one, even with the 10s, so that wouldn't be an issue.

Wow. 9's? I wouldn't even attempt those. The 10's are as light as I dare go.

I think it's a totally personal decision, based on each player's unique hands, & the type of music being played. Experiment with several types of string until you find the one that's most comfortable as well as musically expressive.
Best wishes with your new 5120.

Scott said it perfectly. Like most things in life, you must experiment to find out what works best for YOU. Welcome to the forum, Perry!

Thanks Scott. I have a SG Special and a Fender Telecaster. The 10's are really good on those, but I'm having tuning issues with the Gretsch. It seems to stay tuned best in when it's in a very warm place. The Gretsch is really a great guitar. Plays easy. I just think it probably needs the 11's. Thanks for the input.

I play all types of music. I love the Gretsch on the standards and some country. I take all 3 guitars when I play, but it's a pain to change out during a set. Generally I try not to do that. I appreciate the input. I'm loving it here. Great info. I am considering changing the tuning keys, but I'm not sure what I want. I put Grover's on the Fender and they are great.

Your tuning problems will be at the topnut. try pencil lead graphite or "Nutsauce" your tuning trouble will disappear.

Oh trust me I know what you mean. It took about three months to get to the "happy medium" but believe me, it stays in perfect tune. And yes I do use the Bigsby alot also. I may even go to a more extreme "light top/heavy bottom" set up meaning 9's to 52's

Let me know how that works out. I've put the 11's with the wound 3rd on. Playing a gig today, so I'll see how it goes. Have a great 4th.
