Brass nut
Saw one on eBay the other night. Anyone have any thoughts on a brass nut on a 5120? I see the Eddie Cochran model uses one.

I put one on my G5120 and love it. You will get the benefit of tuning stability with any upgraded nut, but the brass really sings on open chords. I picked mine up from blackrider for about $13 shipped. It was a drop in replacement with no modifications needed. Cheap, easy upgrade. I will be putting one in my 6120 when I can find a new bridge to match.

I've often thought that Compton should offer a range of metal nuts. I've been looking for a Titanium nut, but can't find one anywhere.
So, a few of my Gretsch's have brass nuts, quite a few have Fender LSR roller nuts - and only the pro lines are stock (save for a reversible Compton bridge)

Well keep in mind, it can be seen as an upgrade, or a mistake if you dont enjoy the timbre and color it produces. I reccomend buying a bone or graphite replacement at the same time in case you just cant take it. lol.

The questions go together. Slotting also means side to side. More binding happens on the sides of the nut slot than just where it rounds @ the bottom.
The brass nut COULD relieve binding, or make it worse as steel is more dense than the brass. So Slotting it will probably be neccesary, but sometimes necessary just means rubbing an old guitar string in the slot.
A guy in your area was asking me about doing this, and I told him as soon as I felt more comfortable performing total nut replacement or blank slotting I could install one. Actually putting a nut on an epiphone bass today. (just plastic mind you) but its totally a practice thing. I know a guy who bought an extra tele neck to just practice on.

Very interesting thread.
How would brass nut work on a stratocaster?
A friend who is apparently very good at guitar repair stuff offered to replace frets on my strat with the brass ones.
Does anybody have any experience with this ones?
Reading this thread made me think that I could also have a brass nut fitted while having guitar re-fretted at the same time.
Sorry, don't mean to highjack this thread, just seems as a good place to ask a related question.

I've had a brass nut on my strat for twenty some years. It was already installed when I bought it, so can't say about the difference it made. I would definitly use another one again though.

Yes, that is the nut I have. I did not need to do anything but drop it in and add a little drop of glue. The plastic nut that comes on many guitars is cheap and can cause issues when you use the Bigsby. I have had no issues with mine since I replaced the nut about a month ago.

I had my luthier friend handmake me one for my 3140. Sounds great with open-string chords and the T-Armonds. Doesn't make any difference to full-fretted chords.

My Gordon Smith Graduate 60 has a brass nut, as above sound wise- great for open chord ringing tones. It seems 'slippier' than bone to me, I've had zero tuning issues with this guitar.

I think that would be a mistake. Since it is pretty rare for a replacement nut to drop right in, and we being all familiar with Wayne's exemplary products and workmanship, anything less would be sure to disappoint.

Bought one from the link. Eager to see what it sounds like, and if it helps my E and A stay in tune.

Bought one from Blackrider after seeing this thread. Just put it on today. I was a little concerned because the slots don't seem deep enough but i figured i'd give it a shot and see what happens.
Overall my tuning stability has been greatly increased. So far the strings are sitting where they're supposed to. My only regret is that i didn't take the time to polish it up before installing it. Oh well, next string change i'll do it.

That's really good news. Still haven't got mine yet, but when I do I'll post pics and give my verdict.

Got my brass nut installed, and I'm pretty pleased. So far so good. Overall tuning stability. Seemed a little narrow, but headstock overlay should mask that more.
