The pickup mounting rings look just as ugly as the Gretschbucker ones on the 5120, the bridge also looks like the tone sucking one used on the 5120. I'm not going to rush to buy one. I'm quite happy with my modified 5120, (Filtertrons with Gretsch plastic bezels and an excellent Compton bridge) and my stock, (well apart from pickguard), 5129.

I can already see this is going to bring a whole new era of internet debates..

"My modded 5120 is better than your stock 5420"

Just can't please some people..

This is exactly what the Gretschbucker haters wanted.. filtertrons in a electromatic..

So what if they are blacktop or not.. they are filtertrons not Gretschbuckers..

Im still waiting to see a definative street price.
If they are still under 800, ill pick one up.

If theyre way above that Ill be disappointed. You can get a used pro 16" for around or not much more than 1K.
If they want to sell in the 1K segment they should offer 17"s without the Baldwin era appointments.

You cant hit a proline 17" for under 2k unless your exremely lucky.

As the OP stated, no info/details from the factory on a G5420. Can't guess on pricing when there's guessing on what the guitar will be.

The only facts that are known today are that the 5422's will hit the streets around July, are available in a bass/6 string/12 string, and will be around $1k street price.

This new series just went "public" last weekend, no "official" printed material and specs are available yet, so have a little patience.

Good things will be coming.

I have some Blacktop Filter'trons in a Double Jet and honestly, they are light years better than Gretschbuckers. You can't even compare them although I do admit I prefer a regular Filtertron, but not by much.

As much as I lke the "Gretschbuckers" for their own distinctive sound and tone kinda in the middle of Gibson and Gretsch, they never had that "Great Gretsch Sound". That has now been corrected with the Baldwin era "black top" Filter 'Trons. They are a definite improvement. They also look tidier than the "Gretschbuckers" which appeared to be "too big" for the G5122. There have been some comments on the "black top" Filter 'Trons on the new Pro Jets, and they are REAL Gretsch pickups.

Also, the body depth of 2" is historically correct and in keeping with the G6122 and G6120 1962, the latter being the logical "step up" from the the new G5422.

Strange how everyone hates G-buckers. My 2010 5120 with the pup heights balanced, and the pole height clarity adjustment sounds just fine. In fact, there's almost nothing to choose between that and my 2005 5126 with DeArmonds.

I don't hate the "Gretschbuckers" - I like them. They've got their own unique voice and character, just as the mini-humbuckers on the earlier G523x Pro Jets did. Gretsch/FMIC have the advantage over the competition with these "black top" Filter 'Trons. Because they are true Filter 'Trons, they are subject to copyright and that's that. Gibson/Epiphone and even GFS can't replicate these pickups.

This bold move has made certain the Epiphone Emperor Swingster was rendered obsolete along with the G5122 and G5120. Also, that leaves Peerless in the clear to continue using the older pickups without any worries. So, we now have Filter 'Trons in the Electromatic range. Will we see the reintroduction of the DeArmond 2000, or will FMIC/Gretsch drop one set of pole pieces and give the Electromatic range Hi Lo 'Tons?

Exactly what parts of a filtertron pickup have any patent protection, (other than the name)? TV Jones makes a much improved filtertron style pickup and hasn't been in trouble. Pickups are just wire and magnets, if you could patent a pickup Fender would have done so years ago.

Even if they sound as good as the chrome HS Filtertrons those blacktops still look ugly in their huge mounting rings and the bridge looks exaclly like the nasty thing on the 5120. Why won't Gretsch put HS Filtertrons on Electromatics? Is it because they fear loss of sales of their more expensive guitars? I really think that they have nothing to worry about, my HS Filtertron modded 5120 sounds fine but my Gretsch 1964 Country Classic is streets ahead in build quality and finish.

The build quality and finish on the 5422's are on the same level as the Pro Lines guitars.

So is the playability.

Many pickups have been patented (the PAFs most famously). But patents are only for a limited time (I think 14 years), after which time anyone can use the patented technology.
