Default Gretsch Bass Question

Howdy all. I have been recruited to be a backup bass player with our church p/w band. I have never played bass before, but I have a teacher that will help me muddle thru.
I went looking at basses yesterday. I have a very small ($250) or so budget to work with. I ran across a Gretsch G2202 (Pro Jet?) bass. It is a short scale and feels a little more comfortable than the longer scale basses. The sound was pretty punchy.
Does anyone have any experience positive or negative on these? HC review says they are great, but then again they say that EVERYTHING is great. A bass forum dismissed it immediately. Any thoughts?
Thanks

My son owns a Viola bass made by Epiphone, it costs about that much new, we really like it. Gretsch products are very nice compare them with the Fender Squire P bass and I am sure you will like the Gretsch or Epi better.

I don't have any direct experience with Gretsch basses but IMO short scale has some distinct advantages. For the first thing, they are a lot easier to play, especially in the lower positions. Secondly, the short scale changes the attack of the notes and I find it more similar to a double bass. They aren't necessarily the answer for lots of poppin' and a slappin' but for what you have in mind it should work well.

Although I have a Gretsch bass I wouldn't call myself much of a bass player so I wouldn't say I'm too qualified to answer this. That never stopped me before so there!

Mine is a pro line I know of people who have the Electromatics and love them. Then again if you go over to the regular bass forums and ask some of the guys who have high dollar basses may take a crap on them. Give or take it's best to find what you're looking for and make up your own mind. I think Dignan over on the GDP has several and would be a great resource.

I was never that much of a guitar player and I don't know how much of a bass player I could become but this bass will always be with me. Fred Gretsch and Joe Carducci gave this to me and I would never sell it. The Govn't would have to take it at gunpoint!

Labor Day I had a beer and I think that was the first one since Nashville. I was binge drinking there because it was so darn hot and sticky. Rarely drink anymore...............if my one buddy is with me it's Yeungling Lager

I was just kidding!

Synchro does not endorse the intravenious use of alcohol without medical supervision. Neither does Synchro suggest overindulgence in alcoholic beverages. If you even see alcohol at any time run and tell someone in authority then bury your head in your arms until your parents can come and pick you up.
