Finally got the HS Filtertrons in my 5120 and.......
........boy, am I pleased! I haven't even fine tuned heights or even started to tweak the polepieces but I think it sounds great and pure Getsch for sure.
Have had them for a couple of weeks but couldn't find time to install them. Also replaced the .047 tone cap with a .022. That's definitely going to be a mod for my 5122 as well. Now I've got a much better comparison to further tweak my 5122 Gretschbuckers.
I know the rule, but we have misplaced our digital camera. I did take several cell phone pix of the pickup mounts I fabricated, etc. and will try to post those this weekend for folks who might be interested.
I'm sure the TV Jones are fantastic, but for only $120 plus the price of a new tone cap, the HS Filtertrons were a big upgrade.

Yep,those HS's are a treat.I did replace the HS's in my 6120 with TV Classics and do think they are wonderful, but in these times of economic WOE,I would not have.Luckily,I'm fortunate enough to still have a Tenny with HS Filters and they continue to surprise me with some unique tones.Congrat's on the HS's in the 5120.Most people seem to go for the TV's as a replacement without considering the HS's.Seems so,anyway.

Go kat Go!! Filters sound great, but you have to make a bar to go under the pickup so it will work with the English mount rings. It is not that hard, you can even use a Popsicle stick. Or you can mount rails of wood in the pup holes for the pickups to sit on. We are putting Filters in my son's Projet DC and it takes some wood working to get then to fit. It is definitely worth it!!

Way to go never played a Gretsch without HS's so I cannot compare them with Dyna's. Owned and played a lot of guitars over the years and I think HS's sound as sweet as you can get.

Well, we still haven't found the digital camera and my cell phone with the photos I took with it pooched this weekend, so I'm not doing very well getting some pix posted. Got the phone repaired and managed to get the pix to my email but they are small and I can't seem to attach them here. If anyone can give me some tips I'd be glad to post them......they show the mounts. I got the pickups installed with no problems but I can't seem to figure out how to share some pix - Duh!!!! sorry........
Anyway in response to theboss, I purchased my HS Filtertrons from Antique Electonics Supply. Their price was just under $60 each with free shipping in the conUS on orders over $100.

Geezer - I bought my Gretsch rings from an EBay store - new, in orig. package in gold for $3.95 each. I'd probably buy the clear ones another time and paint the bottoms gold myself, because that's what I ended up doing. I had to carefully drill holes in them to accept height adjustment screws and figured I should put a piece of blue painters tape on the bottom so I wouldn't mess them up drilling them. Even though the tape is low tack, it pulled some of the gold paint off them so I had to strip and repaint.

Well, I still can't get the doggone pix to attach, which is too bad because I took step by step photos of my install.
Oh well, as bobkat said above, you need to fashion some type of mounting bar which is not difficult. If you want to see some pix of how it can be done, jump over to The Gretsch Pages site and onto their "pickups" subforum - there's a thread there titled "Hillbilly Mounts" with some good pix. I did mine in somewhat similar fashion but used strips of some tough nylon-like material I cut down on my table saw.

I put TV Jones classics in my 5120 a couple of years back and also a new TVJ wiring harness. It sounds alot better than stock but I realized I like the Filters better, they are hotter and twangier to my ears! I was nervous about making the bars and just figured I would go with the TVs because everybody said they were the best. They are great pups and the wiring harness is top notch! BUT,,,I like Filters!! Good on ya Gretsch for making incredible pups!!
