fjr_wertheimber May 2nd, 2009, 09:54 AM I got a Holy Grail Reverb... loved the reverb, but it hissed like a pit full of snakes. BIG snakes, at that. Drove me absolutely bonkers. Drove me back to GC, in fact, to return it.
So, my question is, what reverb do y'all recommend for under $150? Pedal, effects unit, what?

I've heard good thiungs about the DigiTech reverb pedal.
chicago slim May 2nd, 2009, 10:40 AM The problem I have with reverb pedals, is that you need to adjust then to each room. What you set at home, doesn't work at a jam or gig. Having it built unto an amp, it's easy to adjust. Pedals get pre-set, and most tend to use it every where. If you don't have it on your amp, I would go with a MFX pedal like the Zoom G2 ($99.99).
We have other threads, about this pedal. It gives you a digital "spring reverb", plate reverb, hall reverb (that sounds very good), echo, delay, tape echo, etc.
JBennett May 2nd, 2009, 10:59 AM I love my Danelectro Spring King.
It's a real spring reverb in a foot pedal with a little big of digital slap back echo added in.
Lots of fun, surfy Ventures type spring reverb that can be rolled back to a nice 1950's Buddy Holly sort of reverb. Fun simple box. You can't get that huge hall sound, but I never like that kind of reverb anyway. Not sure what you're looking for.

roadjunkie May 2nd, 2009, 11:53 AM I'll have to go check and see were I saw it posted but there was this lil' pedal smaller the a MXR box but did it ever sound large.
fjr_wertheimber May 2nd, 2009, 04:59 PM Went to GC today and tried three Holy Grails, all with the EH adapters. Hiss, HISS, and even more hiss. With a SS amp, not too bad, but with any tube amp, hiss. WTF? Finally settled on a Boss RV-5. Thought about getting an RE-20, but like the delay on my Carbon Copy better, and the spring reverb setting on the RV-5 more than the RE-20's reverb.
workknot May 2nd, 2009, 06:58 PM JBennett: Nice demo on that first Danelectro unit. Sound like you have the Ventures licks down.

GuitarPlayer May 2nd, 2009, 10:16 PM Line 6 Verbzilla. Very quiet, versatile, $149 new, less than $100 on eBay

rcboals May 3rd, 2009, 12:06 PM Did I just happen to mention that the ZOOM G2 is pretty amazing? $99.00 Reverb you want and a whole lot more. Great reverb as good as any pedal I have ever tried. Nothing will really sound as good as a full size real spring reverb.
ruger9 May 3rd, 2009, 04:52 PM Opinions & preferences on reverbs are all over the board. I've had:
Digitech Digiverb
Holy Grail Plus (2 of them)
Marshall Reflector
Line 6 Verbzilla
Behringer RV600 (copy of Verbzilla)
I kept the Digiverb. Best spring simulation, and I prefer it's "Church" setting to any other pedal's "Hall" setting. FWIW, the HG+ was my 2nd choice- and mine was silent, but you HAVE to use the wall wart power supply it comes with.
Synchro May 4th, 2009, 12:23 AM Among some Surf players, and these guys are serious about reverb, an external "tank", tube driven with a good spring unit inside is the preferred device but the Digiverb seems to gained some degree of acceptance.
DevilYouKnow May 4th, 2009, 12:43 AM I want one of these. From what I can tell it sounds pretty quiet and has a LOT of verb given the size of the box. I think it's around $140:

GentleBen May 4th, 2009, 07:55 AM I bought a Holy Grail off of EBay and have used it for playing lead through a blackface Bassman as well as into a PA channel. I Have never had any hiss from this unit. I tried to get it to hiss at different reverb and volume levels and it just won't hiss.
dafreeze May 4th, 2009, 08:50 AM The Boss FDR-1 Fender Deluxe Reverb Pedal sells for $120.
I don't like mine so much I'll let it go for $75.
DevilYouKnow May 4th, 2009, 01:45 PM That looks nice Dafreeze so ... what's the downside? Sports an awful lot of controls for a reverb unit. Maybe that's the downside. That said, sounds like a great deal for the money and, I assume, relatively little use.
ruger9 May 4th, 2009, 03:58 PM fwiw, I didn't like the reverb on the FDR-1 at all. (Actaully, didn't like the pedal at all). But I remember the reverb being very touchy... going from subtle to over-the-top in like 1 number on the dial. Alot of people also complain that the FDR-1's reverb sounds "too digital" (it has digtial artifacts in the reverb that you can hear.)
Used Digiverbs can be had for well under $100.
dafreeze May 5th, 2009, 01:48 AM It's the only Boss I own. Bought it for the Pro Jr. I use to take to work. I'd tried a DanElectro Corned Beef Reverb, wasn't satisfied so started watching and reading about these.
Bought it off the bay, new for $90. The gain and eq are OK, but the reverb sounds as if it's going across a cymbal or something. It's better than nothing, but disappointing. Half the areas I work in are big, cavernous and concrete so then it's not needed.
ruger9 May 5th, 2009, 04:41 AM Man, that Corned Beef was the WORST reverb... no, the worst PEDAL EVER. And it's not even a reverb- it's a really really short delay that's trying to BE a reverb. Just awful!
dafreeze May 5th, 2009, 04:44 AM whatta you want for $25.
Scott May 5th, 2009, 09:20 AM Some of the Dan-o stuff is pretty good, especially for the money. I love the BLT slap echo pedal...great bang for the buck.
It's hard to find a good reverb in a pedal. In fact I've never heard a pedal that sounded as good as a built-in tube-driven spring reverb in an amp.
Granted, there's stuff out there...just don't expect what ain't there.
Uma Floresta May 6th, 2009, 08:38 AM I love my Danelectro Spring King.
It's a real spring reverb in a foot pedal with a little big of digital slap back echo added in.

I'll second that. It's even better with some mods. I think it's the biggest bang for the buck around, as far as spring reverb goes. Having said that, I'd love to upgrade to a Fender 63 Reverb eventually.
