John Pimlott July 27th, 2012, 10:49 PM Just to introduce myself, using my real name here, been lurking a while before purchasing my first Gretsch. Well now I have a brand new G5420T, I feel qualified to join the discussion. Thanks for reading and I look forward to making your aquaintances.
Best regards,
John.
Tony65x55 July 27th, 2012, 10:52 PM Hi John, welcome to Gretsch Talk. You'll like it here. It's full of nice, helpful people who love Gretsch guitars and other Gretschies too. There is a rule around here though, "without pics, it didn't happen."
We will be anxiously awaiting pictures of your new beauty queen. :)

NickGretsch July 28th, 2012, 02:29 AM Hi John, a warm welcome to you.
It's nice to see a member using part or all of their real name. No idea why some feel the need for anonymity  though in fairness it is all a bit of fun :)
Haven't tried one yet but by all accounts that new 542X is a great guitar. Any questions, ask away, there's a wealth of knowledge here at G-T

John Pimlott July 28th, 2012, 05:53 AM Thank you so much for the warm welcome, I'm touched! Here's a couple of pic's, which I should have uploaded in my first post:

As you can see, in the first photo. I've been a tinkering with adding a G-brand to it. It's oversixed, temporary and experimental yet, but I think I should be able to make a half-decent looking "G" using clear transfer paper, clear varnish and a steady hand....
Best regards,
John.
Penguin July 28th, 2012, 06:07 AM Hi John, welcome!

Gretschl0ver July 29th, 2012, 05:04 AM Welcome John to the forum ! Have a pleasant stay :)
John Pimlott July 29th, 2012, 05:39 AM Thanks again. :) The G brand is coming off though. I now know what's needed to make it better, so I'll make a new one and make a better job of applying it too. Perhaps it's a bit silly really, but as a small child I saw a photograph on an album cover of Eddie Cochran's guitar and that was just the coolest thing my young eyes had ever seen. The G brand seemed such an important part of it's coolness.
Anyway growing a little older, I developed a penchant for rock n roll after hearing "Be Bop a Lula" - that guitar sound was like nothing else on earth!! So I became an instant Gene Vincent / Cliff Gallup fan. Also loving the sounds of Eddie Cochran, Duane Eddie and Brian Setzer; I was becoming an unintentional Gretsch fan too.
I needed to get a new guitar, as my non-playing ex-wife's need for my guitar collection (along with my house, kids, record and book collection and every other posession) was seemingly far greater than mine. I decided that the new G5420T was the beastie for me and I have to say, it's a lot better than I thought it would be. It's versatile, looks and feels great and the Baldwin era FilterTrons aren't too bad at all really. Seems like a lot of guitar for the money and I like that.
Best regards.
John.

araT August 3rd, 2012, 04:37 AM Welcome aboard John! congrats on your new-found Gretschiness! :D
John Pimlott August 3rd, 2012, 05:05 PM Thank you very much everyone, it's really nice here. ;) Had a little scare with my 5420 is as much as the neck pickup went a bit dull, but it seems to be ok for the last couple of days... I'm watching it closely now and hoping it's not another duff one. I may upgrade the electrics, selector and pots etc. anyway one day, so it this re-occurs, I'll do it sooner rather than later.
I'm liking the look of the compton bridges too as I seem to go out of tune quickly.
Thanks again,
J.
