Mixing (again)

Sorry if I come across as some kind of idjit. Following on from the post about mixing boards I'm finding it hard to find easily explained information on which speakers to use. I've been looking at 1000w powered mixers, what do I need to look for regarding speakers that would be compatible with that wattage, is there some kind of formula?

Greeting Bern, I'm no expert (and I didn't read the other post where this may have been discussed by greater minds than mine; just look behind the dumpster of any pub and you can find one), but personally, I would concern myself more with the formula of the size of the speakers in relation to the size of the room. This is just a thought, sorry if I'm way out of context here.

Bern,
where are you planning on getting this system? I ask as you might consider consulting one of the pro audio guys at your local GC or whatever decent music store you frequent. Even if you don’t buy there, you may get some good ideas. I know the guitar guys at some big chains tend not to be the experts we wish they were, but the audio guys usually know their stuff.

I am more concerned about the clarity of the sound rather than sheer wattage. That is why I chose to use Mackie powered speakers instead of a powered head or a power amp. The amps are specifically designed for the speakers. You can run as many speakers as you want without concern for the ohmage drop. You can use different size and number of speakers depending on the size of the room. Also if one were to fail (which has never happened to me) the rest of them will function normally and get you through the night.

I know what you mean & that is something we are taking into consideration. The problem is that we will be playing different size rooms. I was advised that 1000w mixer would be pretty flexible in terms of room size so thought that would be a good starting point & try to work from there.

There are a couple of outlets within a few miles & I did talk to somebody last week & will go back to find out more. I will probably end up going into a store & buying everything in one go, though that will probably be the most expensive way of going it.

Thanks for the help chaps. I didn't expect to find the subject of mixing & all that so interesting. I've been taking notes & finding out as much as I can. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Greetings Bern!!! have a look at the HK Audio gear or the EV gear....you need to buy a system that will satisfy 95% of your needs...lets say you usually play to rooms of 200 people and occasionally play to larger rooms of say 300...i'd be looking at a system that can handle 300 people....HK Audio has the Lucas system which comprises of a sub and two satellite speakers!!! the sub is powered & has a built in crossover which powers the satellites!!!! very compact & powerful...the sub speaker is omni-directional so it'll give you a good balanced sound...placing it next to the Bass rig is the preferred option...if you needed to build on such a system, you can duplicate another HK Audio system or purchase a crossover that will allow you to use some powered speakers for extra front house volume in conjunction with the HK system....l own a HK Audio Max system [2000w] and will be using EV SXA 100 powered speakers for fold backs...tried this system with this configuration last week...worked really well...my next step will be to get a cross over for the EV's as stated earlier to throw out front if need be... the passive HK satellites can then be used as fill where needed...HK gear is quite reasonably priced in Europe..German made...HIGH FIDELITY.. I highly recommend it...couldn't be happier!!! cheers!!
