I may be able to score a nice deal on this amp and wonder what you guys think about this?

My worry is that is just too loud, at 100W it would blow my windows clean off and my eardrums would be bleeding. I'll probably pass on this as it is not for bedroom playing, just out of curiosity would like to find out a bit more about it.

This image is not of that amp, the pic is from the depths of internet but the amp looks pretty much the same.

I had one. Bought it new in late 80's, early 90's. Some people love them, or hate them, there seems to be little middle ground. Heres the deal. It has two volumes, off and way tooooo loud. Even on the 25 watt setting. If you want to have cleans that are so loud they break glass, and don't distort, its your amp. The gain channel leaves a bit to be desired. Always thought the reverb was good. This amp was designed by some Rivera guy, you can look it up. Its very heavy, very loud, and when you turn it on, theres no noise until you hit about 2, then its too loud. If you can stand to be in the same room, its can be amazing, but even in stadium shows, its too loud. After many man y years of being loyal to it, i dropped it, and got the baseman reissue. Apples and oranges. Do some research on line, theres lots of info out there. And don't buy the hype that says you can pull out two tubes, and it breaks up earlier, and lower. I did it, and it just made it sound poor. Good luck!

Ps, regardless of the condition, they are not collectors items, and in great shape, maybe 400, but you can find them for 230 or so.

yep, I'd "pass" on this one. I came close to getting one also. they aren't nicknamed the "EVIL" Twin for nothing.

Hey ya, I used that amp for many yrs. a work horse! It doesnt have to be loud at all.
There is a switch in the back for 4,8,16ohm... pull out 2 power tubes to drop the amp down some 45watts, wire the speakers to 16ohm. Plus it has bias taps and you can put whatever power tubes you want and a set of Tungsol 5881's are good for about 23watts each with tight low end.
I played in a lot of coffee shops in the late 80s and 90s besideds clubs and other venues.. I often kept the amp behind the drummer, no problems.. When it was time for outside venues I brought the 412, moved the tranny to 4ohms and put the other two power tubes back in. Versatile amp!! Not as sweet sounding as my Evil Twin, but ya it was a solid tube monster.

Thanks guys!

My cousin got this amp today, he traded his cheap Ibanez LP copy for it. I just had a chat with him and he said it is a great amp. Loud yes, heavy yes, but very, very good sound. He's going to do some more sound checks later this afternoon but so far he's happy with it.

Earlier, he'd wanted to trade it for my reliced strat but he's not sure any more. Well, I kinda thought about it, but only for a moment. I wouldn't give my strat anyway. It is just too cool and that amp doesn't suit my amp needs.

I have the black knob version of The Evil Twin..and it's the best amp I have ever owned..(and I've owned hundreds) Yes, it's very loud, but it doesn't have to be, and there are mods like taking the inner tubes out..(research this first before you do it)

The 25 watt switch at the back, would then give you 12 watts or so, which thru the special eminence speakers is still loud.. But if you can get it at a good price, then buy it.. In the UK, these were over 1000 pounds new...about 1600 dollars or so, then. At the right price, you will never ever regret it and you will never get a better amp IMO.

I have many amps, trace eliot tramp twin 2x 12", (it's very nice) peavey renown 2 x 12", peavey 1x12" transformer, peavey 2 x 12" transformer, (the transformers are excellent) peavey bandit, selmer treble and bass thru a JBL 15", 2 x roland VGA77's ... far too many amps, yes, I agree...and my Fender The Twin.

But The Twin is classic and in a class of it's own compared to the others.. They are all different of course, but the tube sound is fantastic, and the beautiful bass is unmatched anywhere (IMO) If you want a superb clean sound...there is nothing better..

It's an amp for life, and better in the bedroom, because it's a bugger of a weight to try to lift anywhere.. but like I say, IMO, there's nothing better. Hope this helps..

Thank you Ritchie! :)

I had a glance at my cousin's amp (over the Skype) and it is a black knob variety, not the red one. I'll have a chance to test it when I visit him.

The evil twin was OK except it was heavy and loud. The red knob one I almost had to give away. Each his own, bit I will never have a Fender Red Knob again.

Twins are suppose to be heavy and loud! The Red Twin was for my alt rock band and we played a lot of outdoor gigs, set free churches and hard rock clubs.

ps.
the red knob twin is not the Evil twin as some think. Fender actually had a campaign for this improved version. IT wasnt just a removal of red knobs and grey grill cloth. different feeling amp with more gain, different controls layout...

The amp I saw today looks exactly as the red knobbed one, just the knobs were black. The knob configuration is the same.

It sounded rather good, almost like SRV sound. He could only wind it less then half from 0-1 not to blow the house but the sound was sweet. I quite liked it.

There was a lot of difference between the Red Knob-ed one and the evil twin.

The red knobbed one was always the one that got killed first. The evil twin was encountered during time jumps and visits to parallel universes.
