Looking deeper unviels the psychie of the person who has 'gas' Some have 'gas' to make up for lack of skill. Some have 'gas' because they like wall art.. Some have 'gas' because in this modern society hardly anyone is satisfied with what they already have. It is a very materialistic age. One relief is TUMS (Totally Unnecessary Musical Stuff or Totally Useful Musical Stuff or Time to Unload My Stuff... depending on who is doing the diagnosing) but never seems to be a long-lasting cure. telespank June 2nd, 2012, 10:15 AM Retirement and the subsequent income loss do not cure the disease, but it sure treats the symptoms! big kenny June 2nd, 2012, 10:49 AM OK all joking aside... Nah, more like "tonequest" although your observations may say a lot about you.:) montereyjack66 June 2nd, 2012, 11:06 AM Two years of chemo, three amputations, and thirty five religious conversions. The closest I ever came to self-control was when I was paying child support (always on time for the record). I was managing OK until some enablers showed up. Or perhaps it's just simply that we live in a time when it's actually possible to own more than one guitar and amp, or that some people like the aesthetics and different tones of well constructed musical instruments. Or, heck, a whole myriad of positive reasons. Because, oddly, other collectors of other 'things', generally don't have any of those three 'underlying pyschological reasons'. Heck, the only one of the three that applies to many, older, top players with truly MASSIVE collections, is the third. And, even that doesn't really apply to them, as their formative years predate the medai blitz you allude to.. But, by all means, keep looking for the darkest reasons in the world. As long as it keeps you happy, or miserable, or whatever your looking for :) pilgrim June 2nd, 2012, 12:47 PM Because, oddly, other collectors of other 'things', generally don't have any of those three 'underlying pyschological reasons'. I suspect that those of us who run out of the "this one next high" because we have more than one of everything that we want actually start looking for something else to collect. I am considering expanding my collection of high end Gibson banjos or mandolins. Trust me you don't want 9 antique double basses. the cats and dogs knock them down and the maid can't reach their tops in the Hamilton stands. stevo June 2nd, 2012, 12:49 PM Either I invented the term, or thousands of guitar players everywhere invented it all at the same time. Some have 'gas' because in this modern society hardly anyone is satisfied with what they already have.I've emailed John 5, John Frusciante, Jimmy Page, Rick Nielsen, George Harrison, Brian Setzer, and Les Paul to let them know. I understand the sentiment that we live in a time of high accessibility and affordability of material goods, as well as shopping for things as a compensation for a lack of meaning in your life, but the problem with generalities is that they don't say much without data. To suggest to a group of guitar enthusiasts, on a guitar enthusiast message board that wanting to own a guitar (or associated gear) equates to a lack of skill seems somewhat like trolling. One of your "somes" should also be that there are people who really love the guitar as an instrument and have invested their passion, and cash, into it. "Some" (ie. most) of those people have day jobs and can't make a living with music alone. "Some" (ie. very few) of the other part of those people do make a living at it and have the time and money to invest in both practice and acquiring. calvin lee June 2nd, 2012, 03:32 PM he just wants to sound smart. don't induldge him. bobkat June 2nd, 2012, 03:41 PM I had GAS,,,,Then I cured it,,,,,,now I have SSS SELL STUFF SYNDROME!! and GPMB!........................................Gots-ta Put Money Back! More is allways better, we are feed this through television, radio and the web. Well maybe....I've got GAS and perhaps luckily it's kept in check by finances:( but since I was about seven years old and having Elvis Presleys first album and that picture on the front and all that mind boggling music like Houndog I fell in love with guitars, that and seeing Buddy Holly with what I thought was a weird stage prop (called a Strat). So for me and I'm sure for many others too it's just a deep seated love of guitars that keeps us wanting to acquire more. Tony65x55 June 3rd, 2012, 08:31 AM I fell in love with guitars as a child and started playing when I was nine. I followed my dream of becoming a full time musician and despite everyone telling me it couldn't be done, I raised a family on that income and no, my wife didn't work. I saw many beautiful guitars in that time but while I was raising a family more guitars were out of the question so for most of my life there was a '73 Strat and a '73 Ovation Balladeer, both of which I bought brand new. I still have them both. Several years ago it occurred to me while looking at a Les Paul with P90's, that I could now afford to indulge my love of guitars. So I started indulging my GAS and now I have a pretty big collection of some beautiful instruments and I play them all, every one. I don't psychoanalyse the reasons why I buy gear. I do it because I can. It's my money, I spent a lifetime getting here and I'll spend it any way I choose. I don't care what others think about it, only me. Consider it my contribution to the global economy That's my GAS and I'm loving it! big kenny June 3rd, 2012, 12:34 PM well maybe....i've got gas and perhaps luckily it's kept in check by finances:( but since i was about seven years old and having elvis presleys first album and that picture on the front and all that mind boggling music like houndog i fell in love with guitars, that and seeing buddy holly with what i thought was a weird stage prop (called a strat).
