so I let myself be influenced by reading all your threads. After having my new g5120 for a few months & tinkering with the pole pieces of my pups I decided to change the pups anyway. So out came everything wires etc. I replaced my pups with a pair of taylor HD humbuckers I had lying around + changed my 2 volumes pots with 2 push/pull pots so I can now split the humbuckers, re soldered the whole lot changing the wires for some better quality and strenghened the input jack with a protective plate.
results; soundwise the muddiness that a lot of you mention is no longer present, I wasn t hearing it but now it is no longer there;;;;;
My guitar is much louder but that s due to the taylor hd s. Still I am happy with the result split coils give my baby a bit more scoop & now I am waiting for a rollar bridge to finish my modding.
taking out the insides was an experiance but after 2 -3 tries to re install the guts I now can manage to do this without having to re solder all the wires I pulled over again. The kit gretsch offers is really unnecesary, a few plastic tubes for your local hardware shop does wonders
happy tinkering
