The Duck is dead! terrible news!!big kenny May 13th, 2012, 09:01 AM http://ultimateclassicrock.com/legendary-bassist-donald-duck-dunn-passes-away-at-age-70/ montereyjack66 May 13th, 2012, 09:34 AM Thank you so very much, Mr. Dunn. Rest in peace. Play if you're feeling it. mj Synchro May 13th, 2012, 09:55 AM That's a shame. At least he was able to play right up to the end. G-Whiz May 13th, 2012, 10:11 AM Was he the bass player from the Blue Brothers band? G-Whiz May 13th, 2012, 10:14 AM Was he the bass player from the Blue Brothers band? My mistake BLUES Brothers band. Gretsch5135 May 13th, 2012, 12:04 PM Yes, he had the pipe during the credits at the end when they showed the band members. G-Whiz May 13th, 2012, 01:03 PM Yes, he had the pipe during the credits at the end when they showed the band members. That's what I thought. montereyjack66 May 13th, 2012, 01:49 PM The BB is how most people know the Duck, but he did soooooooo much more. mj fender62custom May 13th, 2012, 04:18 PM Great Bass player....RIP Mr Duck Dunn. G-Whiz May 13th, 2012, 04:30 PM The BB is how most people know the Duck, but he did soooooooo much more. mj It's my favorite movie in the world. I've never known him to do much else. I'll have to look him up. dazzajl May 13th, 2012, 04:37 PM Rest in peace Double D. He was an absolute hero of a bass player and from all accounts I've ever heard or read, a 110% total gentleman. Will, like so many others of his ilk, be sorely missed. big kenny May 13th, 2012, 05:52 PM Booker T and the MG's checugs May 13th, 2012, 06:24 PM Oh man - way too early! RIP. Webster8 May 13th, 2012, 06:45 PM Another one, too soon gone. Loved his character in the Blues Brothers, and his playing anchored some of the best music of the 1960s. old slowy May 13th, 2012, 06:48 PM Was he the bass player from the Blue Brothers band? From what I have read today, he was hand picked by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd specifically for the Blues Brothers movie. jbcallender May 13th, 2012, 08:55 PM Some of us enjoyed Duck Dunn's work long before the Bliues Brothers. He's a legend. I used to work for a hotel in Memphis and was lucky enough to see Duck and Steve Cropper play a benefit in our ballroom. I was able to go in for the sound check just to see if I could learn something. RIP Duck Dunn. drmilktruck May 13th, 2012, 09:01 PM From what I have read today, he was hand picked by John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd specifically for the Blues Brothers movie. Kind of came as a package deal with Steve Cropper I assume though. DrumBob May 13th, 2012, 09:45 PM Very sad about this. I met Duck at the Bottom Line in NYC in the 70's with Booker T & The MGs. I asked him for his autograph, and he said, "Why do you want my autograph?" I said, "You're Duck Dunn, that's why!' He didn't know what to write, so he just wrote, "Thanks for coming, Duck Dunn." So humble, a nice guy and great bass player. One of the best. old slowy May 13th, 2012, 10:28 PM All the great guitarist die early or tragically, with my skills I should live to be 110. elguapo776 May 13th, 2012, 10:46 PM He'll be greatly missed. He played some f the fattest baselines ever heard in rock music, and his best body of work was DEFINITELY during the Stax years. He and Steve Cropper backed Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor just to name a few! He was also part of a legendary trailblazing group of people who played in integrated bands in Memphis, when it was still very dangerous to do so in the South during the 60's. I HIGHLY recommend checking out the Stax/Volt box set. About 10 CDs worth of 60's Memphis soul. /But yeah, he was in Blues Brother's too. fender62custom May 14th, 2012, 02:50 AM All the great guitarist die early or tragically, with my skills I should live to be 110. If that's the case; then eternal life is not out of the question for me!!! that'll give plenty of time to earn my chops!! :D Arfer MO May 14th, 2012, 04:49 AM RIP. Arf Legacy May 14th, 2012, 05:17 AM Would anybody know what to value this 40yr old guitar? ampe May 14th, 2012, 05:34 AM Would anybody know what to value this 40yr old guitar? wrong thread brother Bob M May 14th, 2012, 08:21 AM A couple of weeks ago we lost Levon Helm, now Duck Dunn. Looks like someone needed a rhythm section. I think when I ge thome tonight I'm going to play the bass line to "The Midnight Hour" a couple of hundred times...RIP Duck Dunn. DrumBob May 14th, 2012, 08:41 AM Would anybody know what to value this 40yr old guitar? Hey Newbie...You could have posted a brand new thread in the appropriate section instead of intruding on this memorial for one of the greatest bass players who ever lived. Open your eyes and use them next time. Markc May 14th, 2012, 05:34 PM Would anybody know what to value this 40yr old guitar? Legacy, Welcome to the forum and please do not be discouraged by any negative comments. I'm responding to your post because I think you may be having the same issue I had when I first joined this forum. I have "Gretsch Talk" bookmarked and the page that comes up has all recent threads, but there is no "new thread" button. So when I first tried to use the forum, I had to ask for help to start a new thread. Since you are already a registered user (I hope you already did the new member introduction thing - if not, you should), click on the "forum" button near top left hand corner of any page, then sroll down and select the forum you want. In your case right now, you should go to the "Vintage Gretsch Discussion" fourm. When you go to this page, there will be a "new thread" button at the top and bottom of the page. Just click that button to start your thread. I really can't comment about the value of your guitar, but I'm sure you will get a lot of help from those who can on this forum. I can tell you that I'd sure like to own it, but right now I'll just have to be happy with my g5120. I hope this helps and again, welcome to the forum. rhino2104 May 14th, 2012, 06:57 PM This is just a bad week for legends and icons. First Carol Shelby and now Donald Dunn. It's a sad week indeed. audept May 16th, 2012, 08:48 PM Another music giant has left us, too early. RIP Duck Dunn. Hobbes May 16th, 2012, 09:00 PM Wow,,, just saw this. Great movie, excellent tunes, wonderful artists / people - including Mr. Dunn, who was evidently a star in many aspects of his life and playing. |
