Sharkblues May 13th, 2012, 07:29 AM I pulled Ska Wars off the shelf for a listen last week and now I'm binging on ska. I love ska! Especially the 2nd wave, Madness, English Beat, Bad Manners, Specials, Hot Knives, Judge Dread..... So much fun and you can't help but to move with it. A lot of the third wave was fun too (anything David Hillyard), but much of the 3rd wave hardly sounded like ska to my old ears.
Anyone else?
Uncle Daddy May 13th, 2012, 07:39 AM Grew up listening to that 2nd wave stuff. Don't wanna hear it anymore!
damacleod May 13th, 2012, 07:47 AM Love it. Stlll listen to a lot of that Two Tone stuff. I remember being blown away when I saw Selector and Madness supporting The Specials in Nov 1979. What I like most about it is that it led me back to the originals. There's nearly always a Trojan boxed set with reaching distance of my CD player.
peter679 May 13th, 2012, 09:01 AM Love Ska! I'll listen to it anytime I can... From the Pietasters to The Specials it's all good! Love it!

WOW WOW WOW!!! That was some show! I saw all those bands too around a year later, but not together. I always had the impression Madness was the bigger band in the UK.

They were eventually (in terms of chart success) but this was just after One Step Beyond, their first single came out. I've just found some background info about the show at http://blog.madness.co.uk/1979_part_02.html where they talk about wandering round Derby city centre trying to find somewhere to watch their first Top of the Pops appearance (scroll down the page to Nov 8th).
Sharkblues May 13th, 2012, 10:36 AM damacleod, you were in the right place at the right time! I saw lots of great bands in clubs here in the US in those days, but for sure you were where the action was really at!
Madness was the most fun show I ever saw! Remember the movie Dance Craze?
ReverberatingDream May 13th, 2012, 10:40 AM As evidenced by the Is rockabilly dead? Thread, the love can be spread through use of links. Hint hint. Got any fave songs to link to? Educate me! I clearly need it

I do realise how lucky I was. In the space of about 12 months I saw The Clash, The Cramps, Joy Division, The Undertones, SLF, Sham 69, The Police all passing through my home town in the back end of nowhere.
Remember the movie Dance Craze?
I've never seen it. I'll make a point of keeping my eyes peeled for it. Thanks.

It's all great stuff indeed. Of course, over here in the homeland, it's just "The Beat" ;)
6stings May 13th, 2012, 05:43 PM Yes Sir!
DaddyDog May 13th, 2012, 08:30 PM Giddy up! The Beat, General Public, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. In Canada we had Skaface.
desertfox4 May 13th, 2012, 10:52 PM A message to you Rudy was used in the sound track of Grosse Point Blank.
One of my favorite movies. Fun to hear the whole song. Thanks.:)

ReverberatingDream May 14th, 2012, 11:49 AM Big thanks to Sharkblues and AnniLover for posting those. I didn't realize what genre MightyMighty Bosstones etc actually were (that's what happens living under my comfy rock). Going to bookmark this thread for sure. This is why I love this forum, you guys educate me at the same time introducing to great music I haven't heard. I could listen to Monkey Man all day long.
Sure, I love ska. :)
damacleod May 14th, 2012, 12:22 PM This one's veering into the reggae world, but still an absolute gem.

And the first recording that the mighty Sly Dunbar played on.

LittleRedRooster May 14th, 2012, 03:34 PM Saw the (English) Beat twice in the last 6 months. What a blast, Dave Wakeling and crew really had the crowd dancing.
Anni_Lover May 14th, 2012, 07:47 PM This is my personal favourate from Dave & Ansel Collins, although here we're seeing/hearing the beginning of modern Reggae:

Now, back to Ska! Here are some more Ska clips, and the last one is the first in a 4-part documentary series about the original Ska - great music and very educationa. BTW. Toots Hibberts front man for Toots & The Maytals played a Gibson Byrdland on "Monkey Man" and later albums. I just love those Reggae vocal groups, but that's a whole different subject and thread :
