...to go along with my new 5120 (well, new to me!).
I asked Wayne to file strings for 11-49, but I still have the 10-46 set installed that was on it when I purchased the guitar a couple weeks ago.
When I bought the guitar, I started noticing the dreaded bridge rattle/buzz...so, I came here and did some research. I decided to give the aluminum Compton a try.....also considered the competition, but I am not a "purist", so I let price be my guide.
I could not be happier!
Even with the "not correct" gauge strings, the intonation is pretty much spot on. The thing is very pretty....definitely looks better than the original rattle-o-matic. Wayne shipped it so fast!....I think I ordered on a Thursday, and received it on the following Saturday. I was able to lower my action quite a bit after installing the Compton (but, to be fair, I had not really tried to see how low I could go with the original bridge). The action on this 5120 rivals that of any other guitar in my arsenal...better than some! It took about 3 minutes to install.... And....NO MORE RATTLE/BUZZ!
I'll switch to 11's when the new 1" Bigsby Spring I ordered arrives later this week.
This is the "new (to me)" Gretsch 5120, before the Compton install:
