Managed to track down an out of production Gretsch G6120DSV. Retailer says it's NOS, a store demo. Pics all look good and price is right but there is NO Gretsch paperwork (lost or ?). What would you do ?

I'm a collector of serveral things and the paperwork and the box are sometimes worth more than the item.

Since it is not a 1off or otherwise collector item, I would say it is worth just what you will pay for it and if it is a known store then go for it.

If it is "Fred somebody" on Graig's list then I'd want to eyball it real close before handing over the money.

PS: What was the name of the store again??:)

Use a credit card for payment. So if you were misinformed,'you can dispute the charge.

Good luck, I know you've been looking for this one.

This is from a music store retailer, not a private party. Deal is not complete yet, so do not want to discredit a dealer unnecessarily. I've emailed my long time friend, Joe Carducci...he'll steer me straight I'm sure.

$1600 shipped for a (out of production) DSV is just TOO good to pass up. Pics look good, .so I think I'm going for it... Just wondered if missing paperwork might lessen it's value (not that I'm planning to flip it).

...update... was asking for the serial number or a pic...just got this:

This makes in an '04 model, right ? Not that I mind... price is good but really ? NOS...in the store, unsold for 8 years ? REALLY ? Naw... it's used !

Dealer just emailed back...it's been in the box in the basement for the past 7 years !! No one knew it was down there !! NOS after all !

Hey? After two months of net search...I found and bought my almost minty Gretsch 2004 G6136TSL Silver Falcon!
It was an in store demo model with plastic still on the pick guard and truss rod cover from a small guitar store in Western NC...

Stuff happens ;)
Good luck!
It looks real purdy!

That's a nice find.:)
And it looks exactly like mine did.

Too bad about the missing paperwork.
Check that it's not marked b-stock or anything.

I'm hoping my first bandmate Joe Carducci can set me up with new paperwork ?

Here he is 'way back when' (in the red jacket): (Sure wish I still had my '64 Strat !!)

I think the clear label inside the guitar establishes the authenticity.

If you're nervous, get a photograph of the back side of the headstock. It should show the same serial number.

My thinking is that it's a pretty good value, even for a used one for that year.

Congrats! I'm certain that you'll be OK on this deal. Paperwork is, at the end of the day, paper. If you're looking for a collectable get the paperwork but if you want an instrument to play this looks like the real deal.

I know it's 'just' paper...but I'm a stickler for competeness whenever possible. But it won't be a deal-breaker on this find !

You don't need to worry about provenance unless you choose to resell this guitar. Since you have access to Joe, you can probably get copies of the paperwork at the factory end, but frankly, I suggest you should just grab this lovely guitar with both hands and enjoy the he!! out of it! :D

Let me put it this way: If you don't buy it, I will!

A couple times now, Fender has sent me the certificate, when I provided the serial number. Once was because the store gave me the WRONG cert; another time, they gave me nothing.

This isn't a limited production model or anything of that nature. I couldn't imagine anyone even asking about a COA.

I guess I just don't understand why an easily forged document would mean more to someone than the guitar itself. My 6120-DC is a limited production instrument but the paperwork was long gone by the time I found it. So what! It's obviously the real thing and it's a great axe. The tag with the S/N states that it's limited production.

Whats with this picking on "Fred's" on craigslist stuff?
