Well, it finally made it. I bought this used from Wayne C. First, much Kudos to Wayne. Awesome guy to deal with. Got this sent out in the middle of a Blizzard. HE wanted to pack the tubes seperately, I talked him out of it (stupid). Packed awesomely, Just great. And it was a great deal :)
This is one of the first deLisle 15P heads that Jer at deLisle Guitars made apparently. Been emailing Jer at deLisle, before the amp came, asking him all sorts of questions. In his own words, he loves to talk about his amps. Great guy.
One issue, is UPS damaged the EF86 2nd preamp tube in shipment. Already have a replacement on the way. But, as is, I wasn't able to fully test-drive the amp to it's fullest. Isn't affected when it's ran in Triode mode (see below), only when in full pentode mode. So, I was able to run the amp, albeit one-handed.

This is EXTREMELY well made. Construction is top notch. It's my first, non-production line amp. My Egnater is one heck of a well-built amp. One of the best mass-produced imho. But, I can see the difference. Is it worth it's new price? Compared to other boutique amps, yes. Compared to all amps? Maybe not. But it was definately worth what I paid. THis amp will definately last a lifetime.
I REALLY like the semi-vintage look to the amp. The Tolex is like new. It looks perfect with the JCA CAB (and works great with it)
The Pentode/Triode modes on the output is like having 2 amps. The tone is different in each mode. Both are excellent sounding.
The Pentode/Triode pot is really neat (in theory). What it does is far counter-clockwise is it sets the 2nd pre-amp to triode mode, full the other way it's full pentode. Between, it variable between triode and pentode, along with variable gain. Because the EF86 was damaged in transit, I couldn't really test this.
Wayne had 6973 beam power tunes put in, instead of the EL84s. This is what vintage Gretsch amps used. Guessing he was going for that vibe. Never heard a vintage Gretsch amp, so I don't know. What I do know is this amp sounds amazing. The clean tone is extremely, ectremely good. Responsiveness is truly amazing. I heard EVERY nuance from the guitar. I was also able to get some pretty good headroom, specially in pentode mode. I need to try more when I get the new EF86 and see what's what.
And the distortion is pretty special. It is a creamy smooth distortion with a nice natural compression. It was actually jaw dropping fantastic. At full crank (and this with basically nothing from the bad 2nd pre-amp) it can get into heavy, classic rock easily. With pedal help, super metal would be no problem. But as is, it's perfect for me (no habla metal). Awesome OD blues tone.
The negative feedback needs more exploration by me. When on it reduces gain, flattens and extends the frequency response.
Loved each and every pedal of mine.
With a bad EF86 tube, this amp is still very versatile. Even if it was just one clean, and one distorted tone, it is a really awesome tone. However, there is a lot ways to vary the tone, and I still can't and haven't try them all (see also bad freaking tube, thanks UPS).
In compasrison to my Egnater, it's not quite as versatile. The Egnater can get a LOT of versatile tones. It's also abetter low volume amp. The deLisle can get great tone at low volumes, but the Egnater really excels here. The Egnater's cleans hold up pretty darn well to this boutique amp. REALLY well. However, the deLisle's driven tones are noticeably better, and the Egnater's are very good.
Happy on two fronts. One, it put paid, my selection of the Egnater before. It can run with this deLisle, for the most part. THen again, this deLisle, is one awesome sounding amp, and it's not even at it's best yet. This would/will make a great gig amp.
