Tricone March 3rd, 2012, 06:34 PM Picked up a 1952 Gibson Les Paul yesterday. She's been around the block and then some, but nary a crack or repair. :D

BTW, thanks everyone! If you are into (lacquer) checking, boy, you need to see this one in person. I wish I had a pic that does it justice. Here are a few more:

There is a bit of a story. I found a '53 Gold Top on CL that was unmolested, handed down from grandfather to granddaughter. She did not play guitar, so she ultimately decided to sell it. Although I was out of state, she agreed to sell it to me. However, I knew something was up after her replies were becoming increasingly tardy. Then I received an email one morning stating that her GT was sold. When I inquired, she said that she sold it locally (at a lower price than my offer) because of the fact it was local.
Well, this was just last week. I decided to set my sights a bit "lower" (and I don't mean to offend). I spotted a '53 ES-295 at a local guitar store's online vintage inventory. It looked very nice, so a friend and I headed over to check it out. While I was playing the ES, my friend spotted the '52 Gold Top hanging on the wall behind a number of other guitars. He had to repeat his finding a few times, as it did not register. Finally, after we pulled it out, we both thought the neck and playability were outstanding. (He's a "Les Paul Guy", and already owns a '53 LP, along with a myriad of others). Long story short, I ended up trading three guitars that I had brought with me "just in case" for this '52 Gold Top. It was almost as if the stars aligned just right . . the moon was in the seventh house, and Jupiter aligned with Mars, etc. :)
JC higgy March 4th, 2012, 03:06 PM That is a cool lookin old thing, congrats Tricone!
A friend of mine has one along with a 52 ES 295.
How are ya gettin on with the wrap under bridge?

Funny you should ask. From what I'm told, many owners of the '52-53 Gold Tops actually swap out the bridge for this "drop-in" contraption that makes the guitar more playable, especially for those who like to palm mute. ::raising hand:::

Joe Glaser also makes a similar contraption for a decent price. I heard Keith Urban uses the Glaser version. The point is, you don't have to make any mods to the guitar and it is easy to return your guitar back to original just by replacing the original bridge piece. I think I'm going to order one soon.
