Advice sought on lacquer and primer

Hi all. I am building a 2nd Tele from parts. I am wondering whether it is recommended to sue primer under a nitro lacquer coat. I used a wipe on grain filler and sanded and then a vinyl sealer. I am gonna mix up an opaque color (surf green) and hopefully do some final clear caots. Muy questions are:

1. Do I need a primer (a luthier friend says not but I have read different things on this). If so, what primer?

2. After getting a few coats of the color on how fine do I need to sand before the clear coats? I have read conflciting views on this. I have been told that the clear will initially merge with the surface of the color coats and that I onky need sand the color coats with 400 grit.

Thanks in advance for any expert opinions.

I think the clear will hide some of the sanding from 400 grit but I would take it down to at least 1000 wet sanded. I am sure others will come along here shortly.
