Hello, and thanks for letting me into what looks like a great forum and resource.
In terms of guitar I am a very late blooming newbie, picking it up at the ripe young age of 55. And I am discovering much truth to the old saying about old dogs and new tricks. Man, this is harder than it looks!
The urge to play came after working around the house all day for several months while having good guitar blues music streaming over the internet radio for about 12 hours each day. Finally, much of the guitar music began to resonate through my body and I really began to feel the connection. At that point, I knew I had to try to play.
Being in a decent sized city, Calgary, AB, Canada, there is a large selection of used instruments available. In searching for an instrument that is visually pleasing, ergonomically suited and plays and sounds well I ran into trouble with my old companions; indecisiveness and compulsive gathering. I’ve heard it said that the ideal number of guitars to own is “N + 1” where N is the number currently owned. Somebody should have warned me. So now I have a whole swack of cool looking guitars I can’t play. The good news is since I purchased my Gretsch Historic Series G3110, I’ve been picking it up and practicing every day and actually wanting to do it more each time. And now the days are numbered for many of those others hanging around.
Early in the search, I missed the opportunity for a very good looking 5120 with hard case here in town and at a nice price. I just didn’t realize at the time how desirable it was, and someone else grabbed it before I did. The G3110 came available recently but seemed a bit expensive for the market. While emailing back and forth with the seller, I let him know I’d be interested if and when it came available closer to my budget. He must have been a bit anxious to be rid of it, because in just over a week he let me know he was dropping the asking price. As soon as I saw it in person and held it, I knew I had to have it.
So that’s the story. I found this site and forum while searching for information about the guitar and in coming across this link; http://www.gretsch-talk.com/forum/gretsch-discussion-forum/44114-gretsch-03-04-archive-g3110-synchromatic-archtop.html
Thanks to 6stings for that. It is a beautiful guitar, but does need some cleaning, and the gold plated hardware does need some attention. As soon as I can bear to be without it for a while, I’ll take it apart and lavish some attention on it.
Best regards,
Paul.
