if it has parallel bracing a dog ear P-90 might screw directly to the bracing.

Epiphone uses short(heightwise) P90 bobbins for their Casino and Wildkats(Lollar and Fralin offer excellent replacements for these). I think you might just about be able to screw one on in the bridge position without cutting up the guitar. No guarantees from me though, and you'll still need to drill a small hole for the lead.

You probably can fit a P90 but check with a light and mirror through the F holes to make sure there are no braces in the way before you cut the top. To be quite honest if the guitar was mine I'd be reluctant to chop it about as it looks very nice as it is. There must be a P90 sounding pickup out there somewhere that'll fit without major surgery.

Btw, that "old archtop" is looking slightly newish to me? What is it?

It not that old. It's a Carlo Robelli, built by Peerless.

Thanks guys for all the advice. Still not sure what I want to do. I haven't bought it, but have a chance to get it at a good price. I'm not really interested in it as it is, but it's well built and has potential.

Sorry for the selfquote... but I can't edit posts older than 24 hours...

I just wanted to add that only the neck pickup has the short bobbin... :o

TKS for the help, but I'm passing on the guitar. Very nice Peerless made, but not sure how much I'd have to spend to get what I want in it.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
