Serial number help?

OK..I have cleaned and inspected my guitar very closely and there is NO serial number on the headstock ANYWHERE. Not on the edge, not on the back...no #. How could my guitar have escaped the factory without a serial #???

I know that the neck has been re-set...perhaps it was replaced? Is that possible? And if it were replaced, there wouldn't be a number on it, would there?

Just curious...I've only had this thing for over 30 years!

It's a Tennessean, so there's no backplate. Have you tried looking under the neck pickup? Many early Tennesseans with the Electrotone (sealed) body have a Gretsch label underneath the neck pickup.

Actually...and somewhat sadly...it DOES have a back plate. It SHOULDN'T have a back plate, but in addition to the other "modifications" it received before I got it (one of the fake f-holes actually hacked out!) it's now sporting an access hole on the back. But there's no serial number there. I didn't see one under the front pickup either...

That's where it should be (under the neck pickup)-- sounds like removal of the Gretsch label was another unwanted "modification".

If it ain't on the headstock... it ain't anywhere.
