PDogga November 8th, 2011, 06:02 AM No - I'm not talking about my underpants on this occasion (but all amusing G-String one liners happily accepted here).
My G5120 has TV Classic pups and a Compton SS bridge. I have noticed that when the open G String is played, this note is quite a bit louder than any other note either fretted on the G-String or the other strings played open. This is the case both plugged in and acoustically. This isn't a major ball ache by any means but is starting to annoy me a tad.
Anyone got any ideas why this is louder than the rest?
5120mantis November 8th, 2011, 06:32 AM maybe the pole pieces under the string are high than the others.
araT November 8th, 2011, 06:32 AM If it were just occuring plugged in I'd suggest you should lower the pole-pieces under the G, but since it's happening acoustically too that isn't the problem...
Try touching the G string behind the bridge after striking a note, does it get quieter? it could be the ghost notes amplifying things.. in which case I'd suggest the felt/grommet solution.
GuitarMojo November 8th, 2011, 06:59 AM Different strings may be teh cure. Try a wound 3rd set?
Farmerbrown November 8th, 2011, 07:41 AM Definitely try a set with a wound 3rd, I have them on all of my Gretsches. I use either D'Addario EXL 110W or EXL115W, makes a different guitar out of them, the plain G too bright and busy...:D
PDogga November 8th, 2011, 08:45 AM Thanks for the suggestions all.
Tara - I should have mentioned that I have added some Grommits behind the bridge a couple of days ago. This has prevented the wolf tones but hasn't made any difference to the increased volume of the G String and yes it is the fact that it happens acoustically that is puzzling.
Farmerbrown - wound G-string - okay that might work - I'll give that a try.
Thanks again.

Uhhhh...no. I think I've seen enough aussie men in g-string adjacent clothing for one lifetime, if you don't believe me google "Tony Abbott budgie smuggler" (http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/will-abbott-kill-the-curse-of-the-budgie-smuggler-20091202-k53b.html) (and might I point out this will be the next leader of Australia).
D. Spree November 8th, 2011, 09:29 AM You could also have one bad string. It can happen - even before you go for a total change or a wound G just change the one string out. I don't know why but on all my guitars the G is the most problematic string - whether its going out of tune or loudness. Something about that frequency.
workknot November 8th, 2011, 10:20 AM I found sometimes the G string can be tamed down by stretching it over the full length. Does not always work but worth a try.

Cool trick Wayne! thanks! :)
methc November 8th, 2011, 02:11 PM Shouldn't changing to a wound 3rd be kinda like last resort since that'll possibly mean changes to your pole piece for that string?

What do you mean by stretching it over the full length? Full length of what, neck? Don't cut the string, just wind it?

No, tune it up to A or B, then tune it back down to G.

LATS November 8th, 2011, 02:59 PM ...(but all amusing G-String one liners happily accepted here)...Well, ya gotta know that neutral, muted colours are just not gonna work for that kinda fashion statement. :p
Guitar string sets with plain 3rd strings are the legacy result of what happened back in the day when players took a standard set of strings (usually 0.12" or 0.13"), tossed the coat-hanger wire low E string, bumped everything one position lower in pitch, and bought a plain string for the now-vacant high E position. Plain G strings just do not balance well across the set. The previous recommendation for D'Addario EXL110W or EXL115W string sets are spot-on.

Cool - If only GuitarMojo had mentioned the wound G:cool:
Thanks for the opinions advise all. I'll try the streching followed by a wound G.
GuitarMojo November 8th, 2011, 11:35 PM Hey, here's an idea - what about a wound G?
Bastages...
