BEACHBUM October 28th, 2011, 09:38 PM Been hanging around here Gretschless for awhile. I had no intention of buying another guitar but I had this acoustic I no longer play and GC gave me a great trade in plus they ate the tax as well. So, I came home yesterday with this new Tennessee Rose. Spent an hour last night setting her up and she plays like butter. This is my first Gretsch and I know zip about the guitar other than it plays and sounds great. Any feedback would be welcome.

Synchro October 28th, 2011, 10:12 PM Looks like a killer combo to me. You'll find it to be a very versatile guitar with plenty of twang and the ability to be mellow. Solid bridges are pretty popular around here and they really spice up a Gretsch. The first thing I do to any Gretsch that comes my way is to install a Compton bridge and a set of Schaller straplocks. Interestingly, that's usually the last mods I do too.

I've discovered the twang side of her all ready. I'm a Tele player and I'm lovin this sound. I'll check out the Compton bridge. How do you install the schallers. Do they require a machine screw or something?

Nope, just use the screws that come with the Scaller buttons and your fine. I usually put just a sliver from a toothpick, slathered in wood glue, into the holes to make sure that the screws stay tight. I've been doing this for years and had zero problems.

Darn, I forgot to address the twang part of your post. There's a lot of crossover between Tele players and Gretsch players. Even the most die-hard Gretschaholics usually admit a fondness for Teles, I know that I love them. In my personal experience a Gretsch will do well at many of the same tasks as a Tele. Last night I was chik'n pick'n my 6120 DC and it sounded perfect. There's also a Gretsch that, IMHO, is a Tele on steroids, the Duo Jet with Dynasonic single coils.
Even with 5 Gretsch guitars including a Dyna-equipped Jet I still have one Tele and I don't plan on letting it get away. It's a breath of fresh air every time I pick it up. :)
ampe October 29th, 2011, 01:22 AM that is one amazing looking guitar!
congratz!

Can't say it any better than that...
checugs October 29th, 2011, 08:17 AM Congrats on your first Gretsch - it's a beauty (more will follow).
DaddyDog October 29th, 2011, 08:17 AM I'm also a new Tennessee Rose owner, two months now. First Gretsch. I love the way it plays. The balance, the neck, the action. I haven't even changed the strings yet.
I'm just a basement player, doing lots of Airborne Toxic Event, and Bedouin Soundclash. The Gretsch has renewed a rockabilly interest.
Keep us posted. And congrats!
Sarah93003 October 29th, 2011, 09:28 AM Congratulations! Nice score. I've seen that guitar several times. :D

Yep, I'm loving the guitar. One thing I just noticed however is that the volume and tone controls only function in the top 25% of their range and then drop off to nothing. They still do the job but I don't know if that's the way they should be. Do you know if that's normal for this guitar or is this a problem I need to talk to GC about?

That's pretty typical. I usually leave everything except the master volume all the way up and I index the knob on the master volume so that the screw is pointing straight up about 45 degrees short of all the way up. This gives me an easy way to boost volume for solos and then have a reference point to turn it back down for rhythm playing.

That's what I figured. I pretty much play all my guitars wide open as well. Thanks for the info.

It's my opinion that knob on guitars are mostly for decoration. :) I have a Setzer Hot Rod on order and it has a master volume and a pickup switch which, IMHO, should be enough. :)

depends on the guitar, on my gretsch i have everything on max
but on my EMG equipped guitar i'm glad i can roll the tone back a bit

but on my EMG equipped guitar i'm glad i can roll the tone back a bitEMGs put out some serious juice, within the context of guitar pickups, so, especially with active circuitry, you can afford some roll-off. Strats work well in switch positions 2 & 4 with the tone rolled way back.
Dude October 29th, 2011, 02:36 PM Kudos on an awesome looking new guitar! What a great introduction to the Gretsch lineup! You're gonna love it!
My first Gretsch was a 6120-RHH with the TV Jones Classics and I don't think I put it down for 4-hours when I first purchased it. I simply could NOT believe the twang factor! Plugged it into a Super Reverb with a Fulltone tremolo, and BAM (!!), I was instantly (and richly) transported back in time. Enjoy!
MrVanDango October 29th, 2011, 03:31 PM Great looking guitar... Congrats!
NeilSt October 29th, 2011, 05:50 PM Welcome to Gretschoholics non-anonymous. Excellent guitar; excellent amp.

I went a bit mad. :) I bought that black 6120 DC WHILE I was waiting for a Candy Apple Red Setzer Hot Rod. The DC is sublime.
Bobb October 29th, 2011, 10:45 PM Great looking guitar. Giving me GAS for a Rose now.
araT October 30th, 2011, 10:07 AM Congrats on your new-found Gretschiness! she's a beauty! :D

She looks  here too;)
My volume pots do that on my new 6117 as well...thinking about getting some audio taper pots put in soon.
Is your tone pot like that as well?
araT November 2nd, 2011, 07:27 AM Have a look into the treble bleed mod, that should sort out your problems :)
black rose November 3rd, 2011, 05:37 PM Got a great looking guitar there Beachbum. What kind of tuners does it have?
black rose November 3rd, 2011, 06:12 PM What did you do to set it up?
BEACHBUM November 3rd, 2011, 06:51 PM What did you do to set it up?
It didn't take much. Many people would have been happy the way it was. I lowered the bridge to get a little better action and filed the nut slots to my taste then reset the intonation.
Hot Rod Michelle November 3rd, 2011, 11:40 PM Nice guit. I think I might have played that at the GC in the OX.
Played great.
Rockin'Teacher November 4th, 2011, 12:34 AM Congrats on the new Gretsch - Its a beauty! :D
