Hello You guys! Anyone got a good tip on removing the gloss finish on the guitar body . I think some guitars attend to look "plastic" if I may put i like that. Sorry my poor english.. And please: "you original and no to removing gloss sayers", dont aswer this;p, Stay away. I got alot of guitars.., cause there´s a sertain feeling a of "used..old.. anti gloss guitar body you know.... Thanks

I was thinking of using wet and dry sandpaper, only sandpaper it just enough to remove the gloss finish.. any tip?

And polyester finishes? Can it be removed in the same way, or maybe heat gun and scraper;p, I´ve also been thinking of using somekind of rubbing.. Anyone´s done it?

I´m looking for a matt type of look. To give you an Idea for say the cheap but still quite good Epiphone dot ebony, Id like that to look pretty old and not plastic shiny..you get it. I guess what I mean is that I´d start of with a cheap guitar as a start!

Really I admire the things people do to customize their guitars, There is a guy on here that polished a TA and it was beautiful. The part about sand paper on a poly was something I thought was "unfortunate". Sorry again. You are right.

There's been one here on the board who did that on a 5120.
Here is the link (http://www.gretsch-talk.com/forum/electromatic-gretsch-forum/33039-5120-satin-finish.html).

And don't worry about Pilgrim. He was just trying to help out and protect your thread from jokers. His punctuation can be a bit off at times.;)

Hi there i'm just ready stripping an already batered anniversery. I was able to strip the plastic like coating with a hobby knife. There where a lot of places where big chunks allready showed the bare wood. With a sharp hobby knife with a flat top like a paintscraper it was very easy to remove the rest of the rather thick finisch.
Good luck

"0000" size Steel wool will dull the shine also. Then put a matt finish back on. The 3M Scotch Bright pads work well also.

I just removed the finish on my 6120SSL and there was a ton of clear on it. I used 150 sandpaper to get most of it off and then 320 to slow down close to the stain. 600 is good to finish.

I did actually remove the orange stain because the maple grain was too good to waste. I re-did it in Solar-Lux blood-red, it looks gorgeous. I also did the sides and back darker than the top (just a couple of extra coats) to give the 6120 more visual depth.

And to protect I used Minwax Tong oil, slightly darkens the colour but it actually leaves a protective coating over the guitar without any sort of oily feel or gloss. More like satin and even that can be tempered depending on how quickyly you apply subsequent coats.

I have pictures but haven't dug around this site enough to figure out how to post them yet. And yes it sounds great, slightly more high end but no loss of lows that I can hear.

Steel wool is what I use. Try to get #0000. Really good on the back of the neck. Don
Agree with what old slowy says.

I've used a scratch pad. You know the kind. Commonly found in the kitchen, they have 2 sides, one spongy, the other is coarse which is what I used. That and some liquid soap as semilube.

Worked a treat, but took a lot of "wax on, wax off" time. And after a certain amount of time the matt gets polished to a shine again by the constant rubbing of bodily parts. :)
Incidently, an Epiphone too....
