NPD - GFS Pro Fuzz Classic

Finally got a fuzz - been wanting one forever. GFS had a sale on their Pro Fuzz Classic for $45, plus free 5-plug adapter with the deal, so I went for it. It came in today. Sounds great with the 5120 for that Neil tone, for "Cinnamon Girl", "Hey Hey My My", "Mr. Soul", etc.

It sounds pretty nice - especially for the price. I haven't had much time to try it out a lot other than a little with the 5120 earlier - a la some "Neil" - since I just got it in today, but tonight I'm gonna run it thru its paces!

OK, I'll see if I can get some clips up by tonight or tomorrow..

Awesome. sounds like a versatile fuzz (does it do the harmonic shift kind of fuzz)

How long is the deal going on for and how much is it regularly priced?

Have fun wit dat. Fuzz is my favorite kind of dirt.

Oh man, am I ever having fun with this pedal! I am really impressed with this fuzzbox... It has a lot of different sounds - all good..

I took it thru its paces tonight, and was really diggin' all the different fuzz tones it can put out there.. I had no real idea how it would sound other than one YouTube demo, but I took a chance, and it really came through! IMO you can't go wrong with this GFS Pro Fuzz Classic.

Yeah, it's really versatile. It's got a lot of different fuzz tones in it. I'm still playing with the knobs, and have found some favorite settings. GFS included a sheet with suggested knob settings for different fuzz tones, but it's fun to experiment and find your own sounds with this thing..

I got it for $44.99 + $10 shpg. last week, on sale, which included a 5-plug adapter. (I believe this fuzz box is regularly $49.99 - which is still a great price IMO.) I don't know if the sale is still going on or not. I would suggest checking GFS' website to see.

man, that is crazy cheap for true analog, true bypass. I might have to get me some of that! Even with shipping to Australia that is still damned cheap.

I have a colorsound fuzz clone that just strips the paint of the walls even at low settings. It might be nice to have something a little more subtle. I never thought I'd ever say that but there you go.

i love fuzz!
and that pedal looks pretty sweet
but talking about cheap fuzz
i have a danelectro french toast
and absolutely adore it
i use it as a boost pedal, just high volume and really low gain, and that boosted sound with that bit of fuzz in it, it's just perfect
and all it cost was 30 euros
but for that you don't get the metal box and good knobs

Well, this GFS Pro Fuzz is not exactly subtle! :) In fact, it'll blow the walls off, as well! Of course, you can tone it down, but if you want gnarly in-your-face fuzz, it's got it in spades!

That sounds great. the colorsound clone has only one knob. it would be nice to have a master volume!

bah thats not a master volume, thats a "control pot" haha. it might be related to volume, but it can really enhance what you have going on. when you turn the "fuzz" down and the volume up.

I must have one of these. I dont even care that It wont be on sale next week w/ adapter. Got a 1 spot... (Totally going to have to respray that box tho... I already have a purple Airplane Flanger pedla and I wouldn't want it to clash. especially with that teal blues driver I might not have around much longer lol.

Yeah, the "Master" knob controls the volume level.

"Fuzz" controls how much fuzz tone you want - a higher setting here produces more fuzz and more bass.

"Tone" controls the character of the fuzz tone - Lower setting produces soft, bass-heavy sounds; higher setting gives you more raspy, treble-y sounds..

I really like mine, I can tell you that. It does kind of clash with my purple Boss flanger, but that's okay..

I'll try to post up some audio clips of this fuzzbox tomorrow.

What does the one knob do on your Colorsound clone? How 'bout a pic of that thing?..

As requested. apologies for the lousy photography...

It's a 60's style Colorsound One Knob Fuzz based on the original circuit.

It contains Vintage style, high quality components -
-US made Circuit board
-Ero capacitors
-Allen Bradley carbon comp resistors
-Cliff input/output jacks (as used in Marshall amps)
-UK made 470ohm potentiometers
-3PDT Electro-Harmonix switch (True bypass with LED)
-Socketed BC108/9 transistors (these can be swapped for other NPN transistors)
-Soanar cast Aluminium enclosure / 9v battery or power input (center neg, boss style)

It only has a volume control. It is similar to a Fuzz Face with the fuzz knob set to 10, but much angrier and more dynamic when using your guitar volume to control gain/fuzz.

A friend of mine made it. It is a ridiculously high output pedal!

I do';t know if any of you guys have ever used the colorsound powerboost overdrive pedal but it has similarly CRAZY output!

To explain the colour; It came in the plain aluminium box and I just asked my wife to give me the most horrible nail polish she had, so it got 3 coats of orange!

I believe that GFS fuzz is a Big Muff Pi clone. One of my favorite fuzzes I have 3 variations of BMP's. Knowing how GFS is it's even likely the Violet Rams Head version clone (purple). Like their "Greenie" distortion is a TS9 tube screamer clone, and their "Retro Phase" is an MXR phase 90 clone.

Hahaha no your missing my point on the Volume knob. I understand how the controls work. Its only labeled volume, and does play a direct relation to how powerful your signal is coming out of that pedal.

Some drive/dist/fuzz pedals you can Dial down the Gain and up the volume and it will give you a whole new world of tones. Just saying. Look at the sheet, I can tell right now that it has demonstrations of what I'm talking about in the example settings they sent you. Fuzz low, volume up. (its a balance beam)

Its kindof like the "idiot lights" in your car... The service engine soon light will come on from a simple voltage drop, but it doesnt mean anything is wrong with your car. or how my oil light will come on, but my dip-stick always reads perfect.

Its labeled "Volume" for the average bedroom picker thats gonna pull it out of the box plug it in and not care as much about fine-tuning and tweaking your signal as much as some advanced users choose too.

I'd like to try the GFS Brownie - I've heard good things about it, too..

Biyang apparently makes some good, inexpensive pedals. GFS chose well in whom to re-label.

Yeah, I've heard good things about the Biyangs. And yes, I believe these are re-labled Biyangs from what I've read.. I've also got the GFS GFT-90 tuner, and really like it as well. I think I might get the Brownie next. Guess I'll keep trying these pedals until I find one I don't like!... ha

I have two of the GFT-90 tuners. One for my guitar board, the other for my bass board. It is quick, accurate and very readable.

Agreed! I've had mine for well over a year now with no problems whatsoever. Yes, very easy to read with the big display. I'm really happy with this tuner.

Demo of the GFS Pro Fuzz on my favorite (so far) setting of Tone at 12 o'clock, Fuzz at 11 o'clock. (Master set to amp volume).

Guitar and amp: Gretsch G5120, Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on clean channel, and the Pro Fuzz.

It'll get a lot more gnarly than this, though, if you want it to!.. By the same token, you can apply just a small amount of fuzz as well, for some mild distortion/overdrive. I'm really happy with the tones I'm getting out of this pedal.

I love GFS. But the GFT-90 pedal tuner I got only lasted one gig. It died at the next practice. Not sure what happened, but it just shut down and wouldn't light up at all. The button still bypasses the sound, but nothing else happens. GFS has been really cool about the whole situation, but it sucks nonetheless. They are sold out of them for now, and don't know when they're coming back in stock, so I'll just get a credit once it's returned (which I have to get off my ass and do). No problem for me, I need some new pups for my tele anyway.

Maybe you possibly got a lemon with yours? I got a GFT-90 myself about a year ago, and mine (knock on wood!) has worked great so far.

But glad to hear that GFS stands behind their pedals if they do go out..
