HonkyTonkMichael July 21st, 2011, 07:08 PM I realized that for the first time since I was 15 I don't have a chorus pedal on my board.....ahhh! I sold my Boss Chorus Ensemble along with a few others to get anough money together to buy some other gear, and haven't decided which one to replace it with. I've debated buying an Analogman or a vintage CE-2, but I really don't know what would be the best for me. I've had a Boss CH-1, a DOD chorus (can't remember the model) and a Dunlop Univibe...all sounded pretty good IMO, but nothing that knocked my socks off. The Boss pedals held up the best. Both the DOD and the Univibe farted out on me in less than a year of gigging.
So, my G-T friends, what chorus pedal(s) are your favs?
Thanks,
-Michael

The Retro-Sonic Chorus is based on the CE-1, and endorsed by Brian Nutter from the Keith Urban Band. BTW, I share your dislike of gated snares (with gated reverb) 80's touring did my head in!

beep.click July 21st, 2011, 09:31 PM Boss CE-1. If you don't feel like searching for one, the current MXR stereo chorus is actually quite good.
Are they still making the Fulltone choralflange? That one's nice, too.

discontinued a while ago. I enjoyed mine but the maxon cs-550 is kind of the ultimate chorus.
ps. fulltone has been talking about the version two although hasnt said much since February

HonkyTonkMichael July 22nd, 2011, 09:49 AM Thanks for all of the replies! From the pedals mentioned above, I'm leaning towards the Maxon CS-550 or an old Boss CE-2--the Tortuga Martini and the Retro-Sonic Chorus look cool and sound good on the YouTube vids that I've seen, but I'm a weirdo when it comes to muli-footswitch pedals.
I don't mind having a bunch of knobs and/or toggle switches to be able to dial in the desired tone, but more than one footswitch makes things a bit too complicated for me....especially on the fly.(Mostly because I don't want to accidently step on the wrong button after having a few cervazas)
bubblyah July 22nd, 2011, 10:50 AM I love the MXR stereo chorus. Never tried any Boss models and reason being it that I alway hear them in my chain when their off. I think it has to do with having good quality guitar cables. I do have a DD20 that you can't hear when off, so I'm happy about that. :D

HonkyTonkMichael July 22nd, 2011, 01:02 PM I loved the pulsing LED on the Univibe that I had....do any of the above mentioned chorus pedals have a pulsing LED? It makes no difference sonically of coarse, but it looks cool. :D
HonkyTonkMichael July 22nd, 2011, 05:15 PM Anyone ever try out a DLS Effects Chorus Vibe (http://www.dlseffects.com/chorus_vib.php)?

Or a Diamond Halo Chorus (http://www.diamondpedals.com/products/halo.html)?

They both look pretty sweet....but I'm always super nervous to buy stuff online without playing through it first.

Beyer160 July 22nd, 2011, 08:36 PM I don't always use chorus, but when I do, I prefer a Small Clone. I don't like digital sounding anything.
WATThouse July 22nd, 2011, 09:42 PM It's not considered a chorus, but technically that's what it actually is, the incomparable EH Memory Man deluxe. The slow modulated analog delay is haunting and pure. It makes the greatest Bigsby type sweep I've ever heard. It is often the only effect I use. I even like how it overdrives. I stopped using chorus after that because it adds such a subtle chorus.
The greatest chorus in my opinion is the Great Grandaddy of all choruses: The tube driven Leslie Speaker cabinet with the rotary speakers on slow speed. When the B3 organist at church does not show up, guess who plugs in?

HonkyTonkMichael July 23rd, 2011, 12:31 PM Man, all of the pedals that I've been interested in sell for around $300...pretty spendy but I know that you get what you pay for.
On that note, this Red Witch Chorus looks/sounds pretty sweet too:

I gutted an old Leslie speaker for my fish tank to sit on. Felt bad doing it, but it wasn't being used for anything else. That thing is made like a rock.

I've been trying to replicate the tone that The Replacements get in I Will Dare:

Someone suggested a CE-2, but I haven't been able to get my hands on one. For those who've used them, do you think it will help get that tone? Any other suggestions? (when it comes to chorus & flange, I'm pretty clueless).

I almost bought this pedal. I still may get one down the road. The only negative thing I've heard about it is that it gets really noisey when you play with the delay knob. But I think that any chorus that gives you that option would be noisey. If yoou have $300 to spend I would be very interested in this pedal. Second and my go to chorus in the MXR Stereo Chorus.

I have no real use for a chorus pedal.
I got rid of mine, along with my high-teased feather mullet, my electric blue spandex body suit w/spiked belt an matching zebra jacket, and my Ibanez day-glo yellow Floyd Rose-equipped SuperStrat about 20-something years ago.
LATS August 7th, 2011, 02:40 AM How do you feel about the CS-505?
Well, I can now answer that question for myself. When I got home from work on Friday, it was in my mailbox, waiting for me:
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h230/WestofDeerfoot/Smilies%20and%20Pix/shipmentofFail.jpg
I've heard some chorus pedals referred to as sounding 'metalic' but this one is the first that I've actually heard. Sounds like the amp is rolling around in the hold of a ship. And not in a good way.
My Boss CE-5 sounds downright lush next to this POS!
This one gets flogged on eBay ASAP!
Ricochet August 7th, 2011, 03:24 AM Closest I can get to chorus without throwing up a little, is with a Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe.
Sounds chorus-y to my ears(technically it's probably more like a Phaser). It's got nothing to do with a Leslie(read that somewhere), that's for sure.
TV the Wired Turtle August 7th, 2011, 03:32 AM sorry LATS! that little box is a far cry unfortunately from the CS-550
barrygnyc August 7th, 2011, 11:38 AM Just got my [used] Boss CE-2 and really like it so far.
I don't use Chorus heavily, but I do like some early 80s alternative/post-punk and that needs a bit of chorus or flanger. With both knobs set around 11:00 I get some nice chorus without it sounding cheesy.

Nope - it's an old black screw Japanese ACA 12V.
From what I understand, you can run it at 9V if it's chained to other pedals. Right now I'm doing that with a 1-spot and it seems to be running fine. I may pick up a 12V adapter on eBay to test that out as well, though ideally I'd rather get an old ACA adapter than a new clone.

Well you can certainly do that but you can also do what I've done to both my BOSS DM-3 and DM-2's.. install a jumper on that dumb resistor to turn it into 9v and give it full power. That pedal needs its juice and the only thing better than the power mod is to change the resistance on the speed knob so it can do the leslie vibe thing. I was 100% a fan of my modded CE-2 until I discovered the Ibanez chorus. to be specific the BC-9.. it had two modes (hence the bi-chorus moniker) but since it had stereo outs the B mode was out of phase with the A mode and delivered a more watery sound that was like a univibe and the speed was twice that of the CE-2. When maxon was allowed to use their name again an import to the USA (freed from their deal with IBanez I guess) they produced the Maxon CS-550 which was the Bi-chorus panasonic engine with both the speed and chew of their older pedals. Not to mention a level control since most analog chorus pedals boost the signal slightly. I dont like that so the maxon cs-550 was the victor for me...
..and of course now you have me jonesin for the old faithful :)
Lizardkinged August 7th, 2011, 05:49 PM Maybe I'm just on crack. but My flanger is a lot more than a flanger. I can get most of the modulation tones from phase, phase-matrix, chorus, and of course deep flanger from it. I can even use to to tweak my distortion into a fuzz tone with octave-ups. I just use the Chorus on my amp the very very few times I use it, and sometimes on the pedal.
HonkyTonkMichael August 8th, 2011, 03:02 PM Well, my new used Red Witch Empress should be on its way to its new home soon...from all I've read, seen, and heard, they seem like really nice chorus pedals... can't wait to get it here to see what it sounds like through my gear.
That vintage CE-2 above looks friggin sweet too though! If I ever come across one for a decent price I'll have to get one.
PS - Hey Tavo, do you have a place that you would recommend for buying pedal knobs? The Empress that I'm getting is missing one. Pedal Parts Plus and Small Bear Electronics seem to have everything, but I was wondering if there is a quality difference.....or if there is someplace else that is better? Thanks!
