Ha! Finally!

I've been recording the last two bandpractice sessions.
Last week was hardly worth listening to, but yesterday we actually pulled off a half decent version of 'Footprints' by Wayne Shorter.
I'm a little bit proud of this version; that chord sequence at the end of the theme back towards Cm7 is mine for the most part (F#13 F13 Edim A13 Ddim G7#5 Cm7 G7#5 Cm7).

I am not too happy with my solo though. I can hear myself tugging frantically at the strings, there is sound coming out, but there's too many bum notes and there's not really a story in there (other than, "aarg it's my turn!).
Oh well... I guess at least I try.

I'm using a BDRI with a 5751 tube in v1 (all tubes NOS RCA) and the guitar is my '09 Country Gentleman II strung with Thomastik flats .012
No FX, just guitar, amp and me. :)

What I'm saying in my solos is at least something like
"hey, we're in Cm and this is jazz".
My current ambition is to learn to say "now we're going towards Fm ... And Presto! Here we are in Fm".

No inauguration-speech quality yet, but I'm trying to progess at least a little towards on-site reporter so to say.;)

I get lost moving from the I to the IV in a blues song! You have my utmost admiration for even attempting this stuff!

So Cm and Eb major are relative major an minor. Same scale tones and chords in their families.

For some jazzy jazziness we could look at playing Bb major over the Cm (Dorian sounds). Or A major for some Phrygian sounds (experiment with a quick lick or two).

Over the Fm7 the Cm/Eb major is Dorian already.

So, try Bb major and a whole step up to Cm!

On the turnaround, try E melodic Minor. That should sit inside all those alt chords and sound all jazzy.

From out previous thread look at pattern 2 for the Bb and pattern 5 for the Cm. You'll stay centrally located with those.

Then you just need 5th string root melodic minor pattern for the 7th fret/5th string E.

What in the recording makes you say that? (out of curiosity!:))

Our arrangement is based (loosly?) on the original recording on the 1966 'Miles Smiles' album. Gill Evans wasn't personally involved with that album, but from what I read he and Miles worked a lot together prior to that album.

Our bandleader, Dion Nijland, is a professional Jazz player/composer. He'll probably have had his dose of Gill Evans, even if it were for the simple fact of Gill Evanses contributions to modal jazz.
Look him up on the 'tube: he's got a lot of stuff there. He even plays together regularly with Anton Goudsmit, one of my current guitar heroes. (hmm, that word has gotten a whole different meaning since that wretched console game ;)).

And one of our sax players is a walking jazz encyclopedia (with sound clips!;)). Musically he's an accomplished (amateur) bebopper. He's an absolute joy to play with.

Megabutter: I'll need my cheat sheets and a guitar to give you a sensible answer to that! I think that'll be tomorrow morning.

Those CDs, are those Jamie Aebersold, or a different artist?

Actually, change that A13 to an A7#5. That way it stays inside.
