Whats a maxCS-550? What's a dd-20? Are they a code for the next nucular attack?

The maxon is a stereo chorus and the DD-20 is a Boss 2 pedal digital delay

Well it looks like no one here has ever run across one of these. Anyhow it's on it's way and should be here in a few days.

This is the pedal in question

I'm trying to figure out why I did it! I have a Princeton Stereo Chorus amp. A nice clean channel, Crap dirt It's 2-25 watt amps tied together somehow works out a chorus effect. I rarely used the chorus portion and my brother has had it for quite some time now.

I guess I just wanted something different! The Maxon ad 888 analog delay which is this same class of pedal is supposed to be something else tho'

What is it with you pedal guys? I don't get get it.

I just plug my (insert guitar name here) straight into my Fender Vibroverb, and then let me, the guitar, and the amp do all the talking. I've had 100's of great comments on my tone. Any yes, most often I'm playing with dudes that have pedal boards.

I'm really not dis'ing you pedal people...if that's what you like go for it. However I will say that playing "clean" is a hell of lot harder, and much more rewarding as you get the satisfaction of getting a great tone and vibe for just working the hell out of your fingers, guitar, amp etc.

Think about all the git players with great tone. T-Bone Walker, Eddie Cochran, Dick Dale, Freddie King, BB King, Muddy Waters, Sammy Lawhorn, Robert Jr. Lockwood....et al. They went straight in. You can too, but you need a lot of confidence in yourself to pull it off.

Hey, I sound like a guitar genius when I plug into my sons box's. Without them, I'm just another "good player'....

Just MHO.

I would say that the vast majority of the time I do just that. I probably didn't own a fuzz (O/D, Distortion etc) box until I was 50. In fact the first stomp box I ever bought was perhaps 5 years ago.

I'm certainly not a tone-chaser by any stretch of the imagination. I've alwys believed in finding my own sound and I usually have no problem doing that.

I do have some uses for pedals however and I use them when I find it appropriate. If you visit my site on MySpace and listen to the song "You Walked Away" you'll find the one sound I use that pretty much requires a pedal. http://www.myspace.com/legendtucson It's my Strat, clean, on the neck pickup with a touch of delay. I use this sound for certain types of songs and it's the reason that even at a small jam I frequently have at least a delay pedal with me.

The other time I find myself using pedals a lot is if I'm playing lead guitar in a larger band (5 pieces or more) and want something to do between solos and fills. I find that a touch of chorus really helps out if I'm picking simple, slow arppegios behind the rhythm guitar.

As far as the rest of it is concerned I tend to use them more as an expensive toy, a curiosity if you will. I have a number of O/D pedals, a phase shifter, a chorus, a digital delay and an RE-20 tape echo simulator.

Synchro,
Now see, I agree with the way you use them, very sparingly, and more as a device to enhance the material that you're playing. That's great.

As an example, I have a Rotovibe (electronic Leslie speaker effect) that I did use in years past, when the band covered a song by Buddy Guy where Buddy recorded his guitar thru a Leslie. Naturally I wanted the song to sound like the recording so I used it

What I was refering to in my original thread was the guitarists that use the bank of pedals more as crutch to (sometimes) cover up mediocre playing or they try and enhance their lack of good tone via the pedal-board versus a player like yourself that uses them very sparingly, with great thought, as a tastefull enhancement to the natural pleasing tone they're getting, and it adds "just the right something" to a particular song.

Much like the use of spices by a master chef. There is no one particular spice that jumps out at you. They are used sparingly to enhance the flavor of the meal.

99% of the time I'm plugged straight in so I wouldn't consider myself a pedal guy. That doesn't mean I don't have an extensive amount of pedals. They're there for whenever I want them. I've spent a good bit of money to get the tone that I want out of an amp just to cover it up with junk. If I wanted to do that I have a 100 watt Line 6 Flextone sitting in a storage room. I may have plugged that in 2 or 3 times since I had it!

My most used pedals are a Tim for a clean boost a modded Blues Driver and a delay all used to enhance a clean tone on the edge of breakup but 99% of the time the only thing between my Gretsch's and my Tophat is a 15 ft George L

Now that's what I'm talkin' about. It amazes me that guys with great sounding amps like Deluxe Reverbs, Twin Reverbs, Vibrolux's et all, will plug into this array of box's and cover up the beautiful tone of their guitar/amp, like your talking about.

I was out Sunday night, and a player I know had to get off stage because his pedal array was going haywire and making hideous noises. He has an Amercian Strat and a Blackface Twin. You don't need any box to make that combo sound GREAT. I pointed to his array and told him that he doesn't need any of that. He argued that he needed all 632 pedals!! So my assesment is he's not comfortable enough with his skill to command a decent tone and playing ability.

Have fun with your new stompers!

There was a generation of Hendrix wannabes that hid behind distortion and in some cases won a lot of admiration. IMO, if it doesn't sound good and sound smooth when it's clean then a ton of fuzz doesn't do much to help.
