TheNixer June 2nd, 2010, 01:24 PM I became, well, obsessed with the Rock N Roll Rebels: Eddie Cochran & Gene Vincent Live CD I downloaded from iTunes. I’ve had the album for quite a while now and while several songs stick out I kept going back to track 13. Milk Cow Blues. I love Eddie’s version and I particularly like this version. I realize every person under the sun has covered this song – quite an amazing amount of talent have taken their turn with it. I’ve given them all a spin but I come squarely back to Eddies. It’s clean, raw and straight rock-n-roll. I appreciate that. A lot. So I struggled with the solo (as well as the rest of the song) for quite some time and wanted to post what I and my new guitar teacher, David Cornwell, came up with for the rest of you to enjoy.
Veterans probably know most or all of these licks but it’s also important for the yunguns to have these songs readily available to learn as well. It keeps the music going. With two kids, a full time job and a full time wife I don’t have much time to tab out songs myself but couldn’t help but tackle this important bit of music history.
This tab is from track 13 – not to be confused with the Milk Cow Blues on track 31. I’d also like to say I think track 13 is in the key of A flat. Maybe not on purpose but I like it. It's possible this recording is slowed down just a tad. It’s possible – and it’s the only version NOT played in the key of A. But I think that also gives it a different more desirable feel (for me) and the solo is absolutely the best he’s ever recorded of this song. Eddie and his Bigsby shine in this solo. So far all I have is the solo but I’ll add every little part I can break down.

By the way, if you’re living in or near Chattanooga David is one really great guy and teacher. His band The Pool (for Liverpool – they’re big Beatles fans) will be playing at Riverbend this year.
razor June 3rd, 2010, 05:32 PM Pretty cool Nix.
Taking it to the woodshed!
Hansel and Gretschel June 15th, 2010, 11:51 AM This yungun (I'm older than you) is gonna rock this one tonight. I'm downloading the version of Milk Cow Blues you suggested on iTunes as I'm posting this. I'd like to see more suggested songs and tab in these forums. Thanks for promoting our passion. I'm rockin' the house tonight!!!

I'm so glad you yung'in's are learning something worthwhile(my opinion only).Rockabilly guitar players were influenced a lot by Be-bop(jazz)as that era was just ending. You can't go wrong learning this material. The best, "TROLL"
TheNixer June 17th, 2010, 11:02 AM I've got the rest of the song figured out but I'd like to do it right. Does anyone use TAB software, like Guitar Pro 6 (http://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php)? I'd like to tab it out well enough for anyone to figure out - including myself as I tend to forget things when I've walked away from them for a while.
I'm really hooked on Eddie's live stuff. Here's a little bit from his cover of the great Ray Charles song What Did I Say. His vocals are pure rock n roll and that short solo (tabbed here) full of double stops really rocks. It's from the same album (Rock N Roll Rebels: Eddie Cochran & Gene Vincent Live), track 29.

Hey, I'm glad you like it! I'd like to put together a PFD of Eddie's songs that haven't already appeared in TAB form. I feel like it could make his music more accessible to people wanting to learn how to play.

I think that's a great idea!
Arfer MO June 17th, 2010, 02:10 PM I second, heartily tyguy's comments. Us old geezers were lucky enough to be in at the birth of rock and roll. It is so good to see you youngsters with a love of the music that means so much to us. I hope this doesn't sound too patronising. Arf

Arf.We were fortunate(blessed) and have been through it all really. What goes around comes around also and to each in his in time.I dislike most(I'm being kind)of todays music probably in the same way the older guitar players disliked Eddie's music when they heard it.It was loud, there were no chord changes,Be-bop had just peaked and took an extremely talented and trained musician to play(rock music took an attitude),the rhythm was primitive(although Rock-a Billy did keep some of the swing feel).I knew an older guitar player from the early '50's who knew over a hundred chord solos and knew every standard tune.He said it became difficult to find work and if you did you had to play Wipeout instead of Seven Come Eleven on your ES175."God Bless you Yungin's.Eddie C.is good stuff as is all the Rockabilly music from that time".The Rock Around the Clock solo is a good one to learn although, maybe more Be-bop than Rockabilly(the guy who played that solo on the recording, was one of the top studio cats of the day). "Hail,Hail Rock 'n Roll" and God Bless our young people. "TROLL"
TheNixer June 17th, 2010, 08:02 PM First of all Arf and Troll, I'd be more than proud to call both of you family after those posts. I wish I had the two of you nearby to talk music with and play guitar with. All of my friends listen to today's music or (mostly) the stuff they grew up playing. I still remember hearing Buddy Holly for the first time. I mean alarm bells went off. I had to own every song of his. From that point on I was known as the 50's guy. I never listened to the radio again. Troll, you're right. The hillbilly guys looked at Eddie's music with disdain, I'm sure. Just like I do today's music.

Thank you, very much. That means a lot to us.You are blessed in that you have an old soul and wisdom beyond your years. God Bless, "TROLL"
TheNixer July 8th, 2010, 01:53 PM Flickr has completely changed the way they do things so I'm not able to post a direct link to the tab from flickr for this one. I'm not sure why they did it and it's disappointing, I pay for that service. This way should work anyway.
It's a slight departure from Eddie but still a legend. I think Sonny Curtis did the picking on this one but I'm not sure. It'd be great if someone could confirm. I've attached a JPEG of Buddy's Blue Days Black Nights. I'll be the first to say it may not be completely accurate to the "T" but it's very close and it will get you where you need to go on this song. If Blue Days Black Nights interests you I hope you like this TAB.
For what Decca considered a failed session this is a really good song! If you haven't heard the phone call Buddy placed to Paul Cohen you've got to go over to YouTube and check it out. It's an amazing testament to Buddy and gives some nice background into this song.
