Mixing
Ok, so we got the guitars, drums, mics, all the other stuff. Now I'm looking at a mixing desk useful for live stuff. I've been looking at Behringer PMP 4000 & 6000. Does anybody have a ny advice?

I have a PMP1000 that went snap crackle pop after 18 months. It's not rugged. I updated with a QSC used amp that I'm loving. Tried to get a Soundcraft mixer but very hard to find in Canada. Settled for a Wharfedale Pro that is alright.

From what I've seen, and heard, I wouldn't touch the stuff. I bought a 20 year old 12 Channel Stereo Ross Mixer off another Musician I know. I love it. Rugged, reliable, and cheap. $200.00 Canadian...WITH a road case !!
There's lots of used gear way better than Behringer.

Is this for your own P.A.? If so, do you know whether or not you want to go with a separate board and power amp(s) or a powered mixer? How about onboard FX? Powered monitors or not?
If it’s just a board you need, the choices are easier. If it's a whole P.A. then you can build a pretty cool modular system.
Will you be mic'ing the guitars AND drums, as well as vocals?

Behringer gets a bad rap but for the price they cannot be beat. The Xenyx preamps in those boards are clean and true. I have owned alot of Behringer stuff and liked it. Only one piece of Behringer equipment went down and that was because somebody sprayed insecticide in the equipment closet and soaked the knobs. But, that stereo tube compressor was bought brand new for $100.

I don't know the PMP mixers, but I've had one four-bus 24-input Behringer mixer die on me completely, and a smaller one lose its 48v phantom power right when it was needed, although everything else still works. I won't buy another Behringer mixer although, to be fair, I have had some of their rackmount signal processing units for a good many years and they're still going strong.
My little basement studio set-up has an Alesis Studio 32 mixer and a pair of Behringer Truth powered studio monitors and it's been so far so good with all those.

I think the Behringer is fine for home use. I'd be worried about moving it around in a trailer or van for gigging, though. One thing you give up for the low price is durability.
I sure love my Allen and Heath Mixwiz - it's tough, sounds great, has a great eq section and 6 aux busses for effects and monitor mixes. You'll never regret buying one.

It is for our own PA yes. I'm looking at a powered mixer in the hope that it might be cheaper & easier to use. The FX are something we can take or leave, though reverb would be useful. We have a couple of unpowered monitors & will buy a couple more. Guitar, bass & drums will be miced, so I do need something with at least 10 channels.

I have had Behringers, Yamahas, and Mackies but the best I have ever had is the Carvin that I am using now. You can send has 4 different monitor mixes. It has 2 separate effects engines so you can use two different effects at once and set the effect/dry mix on each channel as well as to the monitors. They are made in the USA and cheaper than anything else that comes close to their quality. You buy them directly from Carvin so there is no middle-man markup.
