NAD - Excelsior
Happy Father's Day indeed! Got a brand new Excelsior. I haven't had much time to play with it yet but so far, this is my impression.
1)Sounds great with a stock USA Strat (John Mayer model).
2)Breaks up a little too soon with Tom Anderson Humbuckers (in my Tele)
Great for the house but won't work with the band.
May benefit with some tube swapping.
3)The bright switch has it's limitations. Will probably install a pot.
Overall it is a really cool amp, especially for the price. It has a different sound that your typical Fender, more like a good old Supro or Silvertone. The 15" gives it a really good bottom and it is not boxy or small sounding (like a Blues Junior or Pro Junior).

Thanks guys! I still love my Blues Deluxe but this one is a little different (and lighter weight).

Have you plugged in an accordion and turned it up?

Very cool, I'm jealous . . . I wouldn't be too quick to not use it on stage. You can always mic it to the PA and have all the volume you want. You know an old recording studio trick is to use a small amp and mic it, you can get some cool tone that way. Any hoo congrats on the new toy

I use it in a 4 piece combo by micing it, sounds beautiful!

Unfortunately, I have already thrown my accordian in the dumpster.
Fortunately, it landed on a banjo (perfect pitch)!

Have you been tempted to mod yours? I read on the internet that an Eminence Legend 1518 really improves the headroom. I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot of mods for these amps.

Just in case you haven't run into this yet Bill Machrone is on the case and, indeed, recommends the 1518. He's also developing a tone control kit if you don't want to do your own parts shopping. I think he's planning an overlay of sorts to make the tone control look less like an afterthought.
I was pretty impressed by the one I played but am yet to actually obtain one. However, now that you have one, if I touch only the hem of your garment I may be healed. (OK, probably not but it's worth a try. Maybe you should bring the Excelsior over to the house.)

Syncro,
I saw Bill's site and his tone control. I will probably order the kit when he offers it. Hopefully it will look a little better than the prototype. I read that the speaker is much better when it is broken in. I think before I rush out and buy a 1518 I am going to lay down a loop and leave it running while I am at work for a few days. I also have an old speaker, I believe it is a P15N, that I want to try. I am taking it to practice tonight for the first time and am eager to see how it performs with the band.

If you take it out and look at it, you will replace it.

I would imagine that the aesthetics are the hold up with the kit. He wants to do it right and even hinted at a laser etched piece. Too bad there isn't a source for the OEM knobs.
I think that the main benefit of the 1518 is greater efficiency which translate to headroom. I'm not planning on buying a new speaker unless I find the OEM speaker lacking for my needs.

I think accordions are highly underrated.
It depends upon who's belly the thing rests as well....

I wouldn't be in a band without an accordian, that is if it was a Polka band.
