POD XT Live VS Boss GT-6 Question
Hi Guys, I need your opinion on this trade.
A friend of mine has a Boss GT-6, I have a POD XT Live.
I play alot of clean stuff, Hillsong/U2 and even some planet shakers stuff. So in essence I use alot of delay for clean tones and I use some drive tone to get that Nigel Hendroff tone.
I play through a Gretsch G5120 stock pickups and bridge and use a Power Speaker (mono).
Do you think I should do the trade?

Hang in there with the POD XT Live. The BOSS is a bit raspy sounding. My Gretsch into my POD XT Live into a powered speaker is a great combination. Try the HIWATT model, change the speaker simulation and mic simulation into a LINE 6 4x12 and the mic to SM57 off axis. Don't overdo the EQ. Start with the controls at 12 ocklock and adjust the gain to 1 to 3 oclock. Put the delay and modulation post amp model. It is a great sweet spot sound that is very touch sensitive to my Gretsch.

I really hope WATThouse's idea works for you but if it doesn't here is my 2 cents.
When I got my POD XT I thought it was a great improvement on the old POD 2.0 but after the love affair wore off, I found that I could just not get the sounds I wanted out of it.
For the last 18 months I have been using a next generation modeler, an Avid/Digidesign Eleven Rack. This device, even after 18 months, still sounds fantastic. If you find that you just can't get the sounds you want from the POD, then you should maybe think about the next generation modelers. POD has also just introduced the HD500 which I hear is a substantial improvement over the X3/XT line. The Eleven Rack is costly, around twice the price of a POD but the new HD500 Bean is priced in the under $500 range I think.
If you don't like the sound of the POD XT, I don't think any other old generation modeler will sound much better. And if that's the case, now is the time to sell that POD!
Here is a song I did using the Eleven Rack (there's bass amp sims too!)

Wow. It's unanimous. Everyone agrees to keep the POD XTL.

I have one more question, I prefer to ask it here rather than make a new thread. Please be patient with me guys... Smile
So I'll keep the POD XTL.
My other question to you is - How good is the POD XTL without the Metal Pack addon? If I did get the Metal Pack addon will it make my POD sound ALOT better? Will it add alot more effects and options for me to tweak?
Here is the list of addons to choose from, what would you addon?

Thanks....

I wouldn't spend any more money on the unit. If you don't like the sound of the unit now, you won't like it that much more with any of the packs (I have bought them all).
I found the Metal Pack to be more of the same. If you like the fizzy ENGLs and Bogners and Marshalls then the Metal Pack gives you more.
But if you want a dense high gain, then really, you're going to have to look into the next generation modelers (Axe, Eleven, possibly the HD500)
Of the packs, based on your U2 description, I would say the Classic might be the most interesting. It has a Gibson sim that is like a beefy fender and a Cornford that is more Matchless than the poor Matchless sims. But even these pale in comparison to the basic next generation sims.
If you want delay, then you might also want the FX Junkie pack for the effects.
But really, these packs are not going to make the Pod sound much better than what you have right now.
If you don't like how the Pod sounds, then you should really look into the new modelers. Go and try some out and see for yourself.
If you save the $50 or $100 you might spend on the upgrade packs and sell your Pod, you'll at least make a dent in the price of a newer unit. Don't throw away good money after bad.

The Metal Shop model pack.
Description -
- Expand your model set to include these 18 punishingly high-gain amp models from our super-powered HD147® amplifier. Crush your enemies and see them driven before you! Made with TubeTone® technology.
This model pack may be too high gain to be of use to you if you mainly play with clean tones.
Maybe of more use.
The Collector Classics model pack description -
- A necessary collection of 18 boutique combos, sought-after vintage heads and rare pawn-shop treasures no guitarist should be without. Made with TubeTone® technology.
I should say at this point that I havn't tried any of the amp model packs, haven't felt the need, but I could be tempted by the Collector Classics.
At around $50 it's really something you need to decide based on how usefull the pack will be or you.

Drewgrass - Notice the 30 day money refund promise on the site? I'm wondering if they will hold true to that, if I purchase a pack and dont like it, will they take the pack back and give me back my cash? I've been meaning to write them on that question.

...and +1 on the Collectors pack. It seems nice.
Oh and by the way, I got some really good results with the POD. I got some really nice patches from WattHouse. He's a really nice guy. The HiWatt amp model is very good with the clean tones. I'm definitely keeping my POD now and will be tweaking some more over the weekend.
I can't seem to land a good over drive tone though. I'm looking for a tone like that of Hillsong's lead player, Nigel Hendroff. Since we mostly play Hillsongs in Church. I'm wondering if the Metal pack will be of use?

Don't know if it would apply to software. Don't know how they could retrieve it if you decided against keeping it.
As I understand it you download the software directly onto the POD.
I got FX Junkie as a free offer when I registered my POD on their site and as I recall I had to hook the POD up to the computer and it installed it directly into the unit. This might not apply with a pack you buy but some companies don't offer returns on software so best to make sure first.
There are some User Manual PDF files you could use to maybe find more info.
You could call their advice line (long as they don't charge too much for the call) or send them an email before making the committing to buying the chosen modelling pack.

Have you tried the Custom Tones downloads section?
I found 7 listed under Hendroff and 10 under Hillsong.
These downloads almost always need tweaking of course due to different amps being used to play them through but some are often a good platform to start from.
