We ended up adopting Sadie who is 2. She is half Saluki and half German shepherd... which is a challenging mix. She was adopted 6 times and returned. Too strong, too fast too hyper, uncontrollable. We've had her a year now and Nora would be proud of us... she is the greatest dog ever... so smart and funny... and Sophie, a little half chihuahua half border collie (a really weird mix) we found her in a cardboard box in an abandoned house downtown (tough neighborhood) as a little tiny puppy covered in fleas and not well.. she is a year old last week and is also just a great little dog....
I'm convinced that that Cesar guy is right... the dogs are always great... you just gotta work with them and love on'em and have orderly fun....
Anyway, my wife got me one of those rocks for Nora with her name on it and we have it by her favorite tree.... my kids have grown up managing with dogs and working with them and petting them and talking to them... I just think good pets make better humans....
Anyway, I hope Nora is cruising around in space... and in her honor, I hope these puppies have nice, long, fun filled lives with lots of walks and plenty of petting....
sorry to be so sappy.

Both of my cats are rescued from being out on their own. Smokey, my Russian Blue had 5 owners before me and he was only 6 months old when I got him. The last person that had him decided they didn't want a cat and just turned him loose. A friend of mine rescued him and brought him to my house. He's been with me for nearly 5 years now.
The other cat, Cleo, lived feral and had raised a batch of kittens to the point that they could fend for themselves. I caught her, had her spayed and took her in. I had been leaving food her her and her kittens and she came to trust me, before that you couldn't get anywhere near her. I tried to catch the kittens and have them neutered also but they were too elusive.
I think that both cats are intellegent and aware enough to know that they caught a break when I took them in. Smokey is a big, stoic male and he's quiet in expressing himself. Cleo is just the opposite, she let's me know exactly how she feels. She is extremely affectionate, rarely letting me out of her site. I'm gratified to be able to provide a home for a couple of gentle, friendly and well behaved animals. It's quite rewarding.
