First...a Compton stainless bridge. Getting rid of the rattle trap TOM was a big improvement. My tech spent some time shaping the wood bridge base to fit the arch top better, then placed it on with some very thin double sided tape.
Second...GFS Surf 90s in the bridge and neck positions. I would have liked Dynasonics, but didn't want to invest too much in an inexpensive platform.
I wouldn't say that the Surf 90s sound "twangy". I would describe the sound as much brighter than the Gretschbuckers, with an open and jangly sound clean, and pretty decent definition when you dirty them up with some gain. This is with Ernie Ball 10-46 strings. For the money invested, they are great.
The stock pup selector switch was junk, I replaced that with a Switchcraft. The output jack was replaced with a Switchcraft on a Les Paul jackplate.
I still have stock pots, the taper is pretty bad with the Surf 90s, so they will get replaced next.
I have graphite on the nut and bridge, so I don't really have any problems with the tuners, although they look and feel cheesy (to me). If I can find a deal on some locking tuners I will toss a set on it.
I have about $775 invested so far (+$75 for a HS case) so I don't think the mods have gotten out of hand yet.
