Those were made by the Fujijen Gakki factory. There's also the "JD" variation made by the Dyna Gakki factory. Early on after Fender assumed manufacturing responsibilities, work was contracted to three different makers, the two previously mentioned, and of course, Terada. Ultimately, Terada ended up getting the exclusive contract.
I haven't heard of any QC issues with the Fujijen or the Dyna Gakki-built models, but it's a possibility that they may have mini-pots instead of full-size pots. This is somewhat common in the 2003-2004 transition years.
